1 Neuroscience and Mental Health: A clinical and molecular overview in neuropsychiatric and age-related neurodegenerative disorders PhD Programme in Health Sciences (PhDHS), Faculty of Medicine, University of Coimbra (FMUC) [ edition] advanced course Date: April 1-5, 2019 & Molecular and cellular mechanisms of ageing and neurodegeneration EIT Health_EpiDEMPrev advanced course Date: April 2-5, 2019 Coordinators: Ana Cristina Rego (arego@fmed.uc.pt; a.cristina.rego@gmail.com) and João O. Malva (jomalva@fmed.uc.pt) Venue: icbr Auditorium, Faculty of Medicine, Universidade de Coimbra- polo III, Azinhaga de Santa Comba, Celas, Coimbra Introduction The advanced course on Neuroscience and Mental Health / Molecular and cellular mechanisms of ageing and neurodegeneration is integrated in the PhD programme of Health Sciences of FMUC and will focus on the latest research in the field of mental health diseases and chronic neurodegenerative disorders influenced by ageing. The course is intended to promote the understanding of molecular, biochemical and cellular mechanisms operating in these devastating diseases and their correlation with clinical outcomes and modifications. Furthermore, the course will cover novel detection methods and therapies that are under development or under clinical trials. Clinical, brain imaging and selective neuropathological aspects of these disorders will be discussed by experienced neurologists and neuroscientists. Objectives: * Distinguish the molecular and cellular mechanisms involved in the pathogenesis of diseases of the nervous system and the impact of ageing. * Analyse the use of different methodologies of diagnosis and the efficacy of different therapeutic strategies applied to diseases of the nervous system. * Present and interpret scientific results published in original articles in the neuropathological context. * Critically analyse the outcome of clinical trials for diseases of the nervous system.
