2 CRITICAL CARE MEDICINE AND TRAUMA This course is designed for practicing physicians, nurses, and therapists caring for the critically ill, including physicians in pulmonary medicine, surgery, emergency medicine, anesthesia, hospital medicine, internal medicine, nurses, and respiratory therapists. Its purpose is to discuss recent advances and state-of-the- art information pertinent to critical care medicine and trauma. Updated information on the pathophysiology and management of disorders commonly encountered in the practice of critical care medicine and trauma. Multidisciplinary faculty from the UCSF School of Medicine will present the latest data on both pathophysiology and practical management aspects of care of the critically ill. EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES An attendee completing this course should be able to describe: Current pathophysiology and diagnosis of ventilatorassociated pneumonia; Limitations of plain film radiography in the intensive care unit; Current approaches to pain and sedation in the intensive care unit; Optimal use of low tidal volume ventilation in critically ill patients; Appropriate use of noninvasive ventilation for acute respiratory failure; Approach to acute renal failure in the intensive care unit; Goals of early goal-directed therapy for septic patients; Principles of fluid resuscitation; Basic approach to the trauma patient; Rapid Response Teams; Disaster planning; Presentation of necrotizing fasciitis; Evaluation and treatment of the patient with acute liver failure; Antimicrobial therapy in the ICU.
