6 Page Twenty-One ELIZABETH CITY Unlike much of the South, which is dependent on tobacco or cotton, Pasquotank County is one of the richest truck growing sections of the Eastern seaboard. This diversified farming brings money to its farmers all summer long from early May to late October. This county ranks fourth among the 100 North Carolina counties in value per farm. INDUSTRIES In spite of not being an in-' dustrial center, Elizabeth City has an industrial payroll of approximately $35,000 weekly from hosiery mills, textile plants, lumber mills, ice plants and furniture, candy, paper box, brick, basket and 'barrel factories and marine railways. It has the most modern and progressive retail stores in the State with new businesses being added monthly. SCHOOLS Justly proud too, is the city of its school system, with new plant equipment valued at nearly a million dollars and separate buildings for primary, grade and high schools. Elizabeth City State Teachers' College valued at over a million dollars is located in Elizabeth City. The first kno-\vn school was taught in Pasquotank Countv from HOSPITAL, MEDICAL BUILDING, ETC. The Albemarle Hospital with 100 beds, has recently been renovated, enlarged with new equipment at a total cost of $320,000. In addition, a modern Medical Building and Medical Center are located downtown. Elizabeth City is also headquarters for the District Health Department housed by the Health Center which was erected during the war at the cost of approximately $60,000. CHURCHES All major denominations are located in Elizabeth Citv. CENTER OP HISTORIC LORE In Dare County the vacationist may visit restored Fort Raleiffh, view the colorful historic pageant. Lost Colony, staged on the site where the first white men settled in America. KILL DEVIL HILL This is where Orville and Wilbur Wright made the first flight in a power driven airplane on December 17, 1903,. along the beach highway to Roanoke Island. Come to ELIZABETH CITY A MODERN AND PROGRESSIVE CITY IN AN HIS- TORIC SETTING.

8 Fag el Four PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE As the time fast approaches for the annual meeting of the Old North State Medical Society, Inc., I am looking forward with optimistic anticipation to a type of association and fellowship that will lend itself toward molding a greater and better society; one whose influence for good will permeate every corner of our state where our members make their a'bode. ]It has been said, that, ''Old men dream dreams, and young men see visions." The great progress of the medical world in its attempts to alleviate suffering and prolong human life has been achieved by dreamers. Those dreamers who not only dreamed, but through research and experimentation, have produced some of the wonder cures of the 20t]i century. May the young members of our great society see visions of new fields to be explored in our professions, and join in earnestly with the older members to keep it, not only on its present high plane, but promote it to greater heights in order that it might be able to meet the ever increasing responsibilities and dc-^mands made, upon our profession today. A rich heritage has" been handed down to us by the founders of our Old North State Medical Society, a heritage which indicates to me, and I hope to you, that these founders realized that the foundation of our national strength and morale are to be found in a healthy citizenship. Therefore, every possible means should be employed to safeguard these foundations; strong places must be kept strong; weak l^laces must be detected and strengthened; new pr^l wholesome philosophies must be developed and maintained, and the spiritual faith of our membership deepened. Let us all work in harmony, what matters it: ''If what shone afar so grand Turned to ashes in the hand? On again, the virtue lies In the struggle, not the prize." S. R. ROSEMOND, D. D. S. President.
