13 Company Snapshot Macroeconomic Trends Supporting Growth AWARENESS OF THE ECONOMIC & HEALTH BENEFITS OF FITNESS OBESITY PUBLIC POLICY Recent research continues to demonstrate the significant benefits of physical activity, including reduced health risks, increased longevity and improved quality of life Regular exercise has been correlated with decreased risk of heart disease, stroke, certain cancers, diabetes, depression, obesity and high blood pressure Studies have also indicated that investment in physical activity yields direct cost savings for consumers, governments, and corporations via reduced healthcare costs Companies are increasingly implementing corporate fitness programs through subsidized health club memberships Several factors, including the changing compositions of diets and adoption of information and communications technology, have given rise to increasing obesity rates With over 1/3 of its adult population obese, the US has the highest rate among OECD countries Obesity increases the risk of many serious chronic diseases, and has been estimated to contribute up to 7% of total health care costs in developed countries The importance of health clubs in preventing obesity will only increase as the epidemic spreads US Congress has recently introduced two bills that focus on health promotion and would directly benefit the health club industry Workforce Health Improvement Program (WHIP): Facilitates the offering of health club membership benefits to employees by allowing employers to deduct the cost of providing membership benefits and no longer classifying the value of such benefits as income to employees Personal Health Investment Today (PHIT): Increases affordability of gym memberships by allowing consumers to pay from a pre-tax account similar to Health Savings Account Source: IHRSA.
