1 OPTOMETRIC RESIDENCY PRIMARY CARE AND OCULAR DISEASE EYE ASSOCIATES OF NEW MEXICO SPONSOR: Eye Associates of New Mexico, Albuquerque and Santa Fe, New Mexico. AFFILIATE: Midwestern University, Arizona College of Optometry, Phoenix, Arizona MISSION This program is designed to provide an advanced educational experience focused on primary eye care and ocular disease management in a private practice setting working closely with ophthalmology. Each resident will graduate from this program with a deep understanding of full- scope patient care with the knowledge and skills to care for the current change in demographics of our nation. This program will provide a solid foundation for providing medical eye care that includes retinal conditions, glaucoma, and anterior segment disease. Emphasis will be placed on the use of current technology to care for macular degeneration, diabetes, glaucoma, and cataracts.
2 GENERAL INFORMATION Residency Program Supervisors Timothy J. Johnson, OD Kelly Cyr, OD Duration of Agreement August 1 st through July 31 st Number of Positions One (1 position available each year. Annual Salary $45,000 * *Periodically adjusted, please contact the program supervisor for current salary information. Hours Expected range of hours of attendance in a typical week of activities is hours. The clinic runs Monday through Friday from 8 am to 5 pm. Time will be given for research, reading, presentations, and didactic interactions. Leave Residents earn fifteen days paid annual leave and five days of continuing education leave. There are also several paid holidays including: Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years, Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day. A stipend for continuing education is also provided. Professional Liability Protection Provided by Eye Associates of New Mexico Health Insurance Benefits Health insurance is available to residents through Eye Associates of New Mexico. Certificate of Completion A certificate of completion will be awarded to the resident upon satisfactory completion of the residency requirements.
3 PROGRAM GOALS 1. Enhance the resident s skills in primary eye care and ocular disease management. The resident will provide a minimum of 1,200 primary eye care exams during the course of the program along with a wide variety of pre- and post- operative examinations. 2. Expand the resident s proficiency with specialized diagnostic instrumentation by performing and interpreting retinal imaging by OCT and B- scan along with digital anterior segment and digital fundus photography. 3. Provide extensive exposure to diagnosis and treatment of retinal disease including but not limited to macular degeneration, vascular occlusions, retinal detachments, diabetic retinopathy, and cancers of the eye and orbit. 4. Provide extensive exposure to the diagnosis and treatment of glaucoma including but not limited to primary open angle glaucoma, angle closure glaucoma, neovascular glaucoma, and inflammatory causes of increased IOP. 5. Provide extensive exposure to diagnosis and treatment of anterior segment disease including but not limited to cataracts, corneal dystrophy, infectious keratitis, uveitis and trauma. 6. Foster the resident s ability to advance and master their knowledge base by analyzing the best current scientific information and assist in integrating this knowledge into patient care through evidence- based clinical decision making. 7. Develop the knowledge and skills necessary to join the global discussion among members of the medical community through the presentation of clinical experiences and/or research.
4 RESIDENCY EXPERIENCE Scholarly Activities Residents are expected to author a paper suitable for publication. Continuing Education The resident will participate in practice sponsored continuing education events. Funds will be available for the resident to attend at least one national conference along with the NMOA annual conference in Albuquerque, NM. The resident will also participate in the Arizona College of Optometry Residents Day. Lecturing The resident will be expected to present at least 2 lectures to the technician staff and 2 lectures or case presentations to the optometric staff of Eye Associates of New Mexico. Performance Evaluations The resident will receive written evaluations from the Residency Program Directors on a quarterly basis. The resident will also have the opportunity to evaluate the residency program on a quarterly basis. WORKSITE Each resident will work at our Northside and Retina Center in Albuquerque, NM and rotate through our Santa Fe, NM location. Clinical Facilities Eye Associates of New Mexico has two main clinics in Albuquerque, NM along with a large clinic and surgery center in Santa Fe, NM. Our Northside Clinic in Albuquerque is 30,000 square feet with 46 exam lanes and our new Retina Center is 17,000 square feet with 22 exam lanes and 6 injection rooms. Our Santa Fe location is 16,000 square feet with 30 exam lanes and a two room surgery center with 5,000 square feet. All the clinical facilities are spacious and well equipped to serve the patient needs and the doctors and staff. Patient Population Eye Associates of New Mexico offers a diverse patient population ranging from geriatrics to pediatrics. We also serve a wide variety of ethnicities. On- Call Duty Limited call duties will be assigned with supervision and support.

Commuting to Santa Fe When assigned to the Santa Fe clinic a company van is available to staff and providers. Our Santa Fe clinic is a short 50 mile drive from Albuquerque. Recreation Both Albuquerque and Santa Fe offer a wide variety of outdoor activities including skiing/snowboarding, hiking, mountain biking, and golfing.
