In addition, the tests used to investigate sleep disturbances in Parkinson s as well as treatment options of these sleep disturbances will be reviewed. A-2 Young Onset Stories and Strategies Panel Members: Grant Cranston, Shelby Hayter and Karen Olson Moderator: Fran Squire What are the challenges and issues that confront persons diagnosed with Parkinson's when they are just 40 years old? How do individuals with Young Onset Parkinson's cope with a young family, career expectations and interpersonal relationships? Join this panel of people living with Parkinson's to hear their stories and to tell your own. By sharing their knowledge and experience in a collaborative forum, the panel and session participants will generate strategies for living positively with Young Onset Parkinson's. A-3 DBS - Is it right for me? Yu-Yan Poon, RN, Surgical Nurse Discover the indication for the surgical procedure deep brain stimulation (DBS), and the process of DBS candidate selection at the University Health Network, Toronto Western Hospital. The role of each surgical team member, including family members or caregivers, will be addressed. Find out about the outcome of DBS surgery and after surgery care, and learn about the lastest surgical research procedures. A-4 Canada Pension Plan Disability Benefits Gabrielle Gagné, Outreach Officer Ottawa, Service Canada Determining eligibility for benefits and applying for them can be a confusing process. Join this session to find out about disability benefits: contributions requirements, what is "severe and prolonged" according to the Canada Pension Plan, and the Appeals process. 3
4 A-5 The Role of Nutrition in Parkinson's Marisa LeBlanc, MSc, Dietitien We all know that nutrition is important to everyone. Nutrition has been shown to aid in the treatment of the symptioms and the complications of Parkinson's. This fun and informative workshop will focus on how nutrition can play an important and effective role in the treatment of Parkinson s. A-7 Parkinson Subprogram at Saint-Vincent Hospital Rachel Blais and Linda Haley, from Saint-Vincent Hospital The Parkinson Subprogram at Saint-Vincent Hospital is a unique health care service provided in Ottawa. This session will describe the subprogram, its history and its present mandate; and how the expertise of the interdisciplinary team promote optimal functioning in the advanced-stage Parkinson s patient. The motto is to Keep us Moving. In addition, there is a growing need for the community to acquire knowledge and resources to clinically manage this population once the team has attained the treatment goals/objectives. This session is designed for Health Care Professionals, but other conference delegates also welcome. 2:30-2:50 Exercise and Water Break 2:50-4:20 Breakout Sessions (B-1 to B-7) B-1 Cognitive Issues and PD Dr. Clarissa Bush, Neuropsychologist This workshop will cover the most common cognitive changes seen in early through to late Parkinson s. Suggestions on ways to maximize function, compensate for changes and interact with people experiencing cognitive changes will be discussed. This session is designed for Health Care Professionals, but other conference delegates are also welcome. 4
5 B-2 Driving and Patients with Parkinson's Malcolm Man-Son-Hing, MD, MSc, FRCP This workshop will summarize the research related to driving safety in people with Parkinson's. It will then attempt to use this informaton to develp a practical approach to assessing their fitness to drive. B-3 Advocating for Change Panel Members: Geraldine Peacock Carmel Boosamra, Ryan Clarke Moderator: Tom Pitfield This session will provide a practical discussion about the role that individuals can play in advocating for Parkinson's whether focused on individual or organizational goals. This skilled panel of speakers includes people with Parkinson's, caregivers and professionals from the non-profit and advocacy fields. B-4 For Better or Worse Maintaining Strong Relationships While Dealing with the Challenge of Parkinson's Vicki Larsen, MSW, RSW, CCC Parkinson's affects everyone in a family roles change, plans and dreams may need to be revised, and communication becomes more important than ever. Come join in an interactive discussion of why it is so important for couples to maintain and strengthen their emotional attachment to each other as they face the challenges of Parkinson's together. B-5 Preventing Falls Isn't Just About Being Careful Julie Lévesque, B.ScN, Chair, Ottawa Falls Prevention Coalition Falls represent a very serious and widespread problem in Canada and locally. We all know that just one bad fall can have long-term consequences, including chronic pain in the affected area, a disabling injury leading to loss of independence, or fear of another fall, which discourages a healthy, active lifestyle. But falls and fall-related injuries are preventable. This workshop will speak to strategies that have been shown to reduce falls: individual assessments, physical activity that promotes better gait and balance, home and environment modifications, use of assistive devices, and appropriate use of medications. Information will also be provided on how to stay safe from falling while enjoying the winter months. 5
6 B-6 Participating in Clinical Trials: Information for Participants and Their Families Melodie Mortenson, RN, BScN, CNNC and Jennifer Vendette, RN This workshop will describe the different types and phases of clinical trials and provide participants with basic information about how clinical trials are set up and run. By defining what an informed consent is and by explaining what happens during clinical trials, reviewing the risks/benefits and safety concerns, attendees will have a better understanding of their role as a participant in the clinical trial process. We will also review what questions a participant should be asking the research team prior to becoming involved in a trial. B-7 Getting Help When Care Needs Increase Inika Anderson, Director of Client Services, Parkinson Society Ottawa Recently First Link Coordinator, Alzheimer Society of Ottawa This workshop for seniors and their family members will discuss common signs of caregiver stress, how to know when you need help in the home, and the types of support that are available to you. This session is part of the Partnership in Transitional Care: an Eastern Ontario region project designed to assist individuals and families bridge the transition to long-term care.
