5 The Medical College of Wisconsin and University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center Endocrine Surgery Symposium will be held February 25, 2017 in Medical College of Wisconsin Alumni Center (8701 W. Watertown Plank Road Milwaukee, WI 53226). TARGET AUDIENCE: Endocrine Surgeons General Surgeons Endocrinologists Otolaryngologists Surgical Oncologists Primary Care Physicians Fellows, residents, and students Allied Health Professionals PURPOSE: This educational activity is designed to highlight current issues in the management of disorders of the thyroid, parathyroid, and adrenal glands through didactic lectures, panel discussions, and case presentations. Invited speakers include well-known academic surgeons who are well-published in their respective fields and who can provide up-to-date summaries of the topics. EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES: Discuss the initial diagnosis and indications for surgery in patients with primary hyperparathyroidism Discuss the different operative techniques for parathyroidectomy Discuss the management of patients with adrenal nodular disease Discuss evaluation of patients with thyroid disease (thyroid nodules and hyperthyroidism) and management of patients with differentiated thyroid carcinoma Discuss extent of surgery and surgical techniques for patients undergoing thyroidectomy EDUCATIONAL METHOD The format will include lectures from leaders in each field along with discussion and the utilization of an audience response system. 6 GUEST SPEAKERS Harald T. Groeben, MD Duisburg, Germany Harald Thomas Groeben, MD, is the Chairman, Professor and Director of Intensive Care Medicine in the Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Essen in Duisburg, Germany. Prior to joining the University of Essen in 1996, he was a faculty member at the University of Düsseldorf, where he also completed his residency in Dr. Groeben is a leading authority in the field of anesthesia, receiving the August Bier Preis in 2000, an award from the German Society of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine for outstanding work in the field of regional anesthesia. Active in a number of scientific societies, Dr. Groeben is a member of the Germany Society of Lung and Airway Research, American Society of Anesthesiologists, German Society of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine and the American Thoracic Society. He serves as a reviewer for several international journals. Jeffrey E. Lee, MD Houston, TX Dr. Lee is Professor and Chair of the Department of Surgical Oncology as well as Irving and Nadine Mansfield and Robert David Levitt Cancer Research Chair at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. Dr. Lee received his AB from Dartmouth College and his MD from Stanford University School of Medicine. He completed a residency in surgery and a research fellowship in immunology at Stanford, followed by a clinical fellowship in surgical oncology at MD Anderson. He joined the faculty at MD Anderson in Dr. Lee is Co-Director of the Melanoma and Skin Cancer Research Program and has been Co-Director of MD Anderson s NCI-sponsored Melanoma SPORE grant for 10 years. Prior to assuming his role as Department Chair, Dr. Lee served for 13 years as Medical Director of the Ben Love/El Paso Corporation Melanoma and Skin Center. A particular focus of his translational research has been the role of genetics in melanoma progression, with the overall goal to identify immune and inflammatory mechanisms controlling melanoma progression to help develop improved treatment strategies. Dr. Lee s clinical interests include the management of patients with melanoma, pancreatic cancer and endocrine tumors, with special emphasis on the surgical treatment of patients with advanced melanoma, borderline resectable pancreatic cancer, and adrenal cortical carcinoma. Paul H. Graham, MD Houston, TX Dr. Graham graduated from The University of Texas Medical School at Houston and completed his General Surgery residency at The University of Alabama at Birmingham. He them completed an Endocrine Surgery fellowship at Brigham and Women s Hospital in Boston. Dr. Graham is board certified by the American Board of Surgery. He is a member of the American College of Surgeons and the American Association of Endocrine Surgeons. Dr. Graham holds an academic appointment as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgical Oncology at MD Anderson Cancer Center. His interests include the management of both benign and malignant thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal, and neuroendocrine diseases as well as the use of minimally-invasive techniques in the surgical management of endocrine disorders. Elizabeth G. Grubbs, MD, MS Houston, TX Dr. Grubbs is an in the Department of Surgical Oncology at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center (MDACC) where she serves as Program Director for the Fellowship in Complex General Surgical Oncology. Dr. Grubbs graduated from Duke University Medical School and completed her General Surgery residency at Duke. She completed Surgical Oncology fellowship at MD Anderson and received her Masters degree in Epidemiology at Harvard School of Public Health. Her clinical practice is dedicated to the treatment of benign and malignant thyroid, adrenal, and parathyroid disease with clinical and research interests focusing on the treatment of hereditary endocrine neoplasias. Dr. Grubbs serves as director of MDACC s multi-disciplinary Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia Specialty Clinic. Her research program focuses on genotype-phenotype correlation within and among different germline RET mutations as well as non-ret mediated mechanisms of medullary thyroid cancer (MTC) with the goal of identifying potential pathways for new MTC therapeutics.
