PASSIVE NEGLECT Unintentional failure of a caregiver to fulfill their caregiving responsibilities SELF NEGLECT Although not a form of elder abuse, it is the person s inability to provide for their own essential needs because of physical infirmity or inability to make sound choices due to addiction, mental illness and / or cognitive impairment. ELDER ABUSE Assessment and Intervention Reference Guide Developed by: Hamilton Council Against Abuse Of Older Persons and the Hamilton Police Service INSTITUTIONAL ABUSE Any physical, sexual, psychological, financial abuse or neglect occurring within a facility DOMESTIC ABUSE Actual or threatened physical, sexual, financial or psychological abuse of a person by someone with whom they have an intimate or familial relationship which aims to instil fear and / or to coercively control an individual
SIGNS OF ABUSE Being deprived of contact with the outside world. Being controlled and not being allowed to make your own decisions. Constant feelings of being afraid. Unusual bruising. Being told you are a bad person and/or stupid. Having your personal things destroyed or given away without your permission. No control over finances, household decisions. THE ODDS ARE HIGH THAT YOU KNOW SOMEONE WHO IS BEING ABUSED AND IT COULD BE YOU!
Physical: any act carried out (with the intention or perceived intention of) causing physical pain or injury to another. example: shoving, pinching, slapping, restraints) Psychological (emotional): any action (intended to) impose emotional pain or mental anguish. This can include humiliation, intimidation, isolation, threats and verbal assaults. Examples are harassment, ridiculing and coercion, silent treatment, infantilizing. Sexual: whether physical acts or unwanted sexual innuendo, unwanted sexual touching or fondling, inappropriate sexual remarks, lewdness. Financial: exploitation, misappropriation or misuse of funds, assets and resources belonging to an elderly person. Example - not repaying a loan, overcharging, unauthorized withdrawals, coercion, exchanging care for financial control. Neglect: any behaviour that results in a person s basic needs for food, shelter and safety not being met. Examples are malnourishment, refusing to provide the person to be able to obtain medical care and abandonment. Excerpt written by Robert Lapointe, past Regional Coordinator, QC.
Depression is caused by biological, psychological and social factors. This varies depending on the level of coping skills, i.e. resiliency. Those who respond to social support programs and treatment fair better than others. Prevention and intervention can make a huge difference. Question for discussion: Are individuals who are abused more likely to be depressed? OPMHAN March 2008
Social shared living accommodations History of family violence Alcohol abuse by either party Caregiver stress Caregiver risk of depression Marital sense of loyalty derived from generational/ cohort beliefs Absence of adequate support or relief for the caregiver Useful websites: Physical & mental illness Lack of social support Isolation, physical, social and emotional Low self-esteem Self-neglect Passive interpersonal style What other risk factors may exist? OPMHAN March 2008
