3 WELCOME TO THE 2017 INTERNATIONAL PARKINSON`S DISEASE CONFERENCE Wests City, Newcastle, NSW AUSTRALIA 5-7 MAY 2017 The Hunter Postgraduate Medical Institute (HPMI) Newcastle is extremely proud to announce a major International Parkinson`s Disease Conference in Newcastle on 5-7 May This event has been organised to coincide with the 200 year anniversary of James Parkinson s seminal paper, An Essay on Shaking Palsy, in which we were first introduced to the concept of Parkinson s Disease. The conference aims to bring the World`s leading clinical authorities on Parkinson`s Disease to interact with our vibrant community in Australia. The Conference kicks off on May 5 with a Public Forum for the Parkinson`s Disease Community alongside a Multidisciplinary Training Day. This will be followed by a three day educational program to consolidate the fundamental principles of diagnosis and management, along with highlighting advances in the field and potential new directions, HPMI would like to extend a warm welcome to the beautiful region of the Hunter, NSW, Australia. 4 International Faculty Prof. Ray Chaudhuri INSTITUTE OF PSYCHIATRY, PSYCHOLOGY & NEUROSCIENCE ACADEMIC HEALTH SCIENCES CENTRE MRC CENTRE FOR NEURODEGENERATION RESEARCH KING S COLLEGE & KING S COLLEGE HOSPITAL, LONDON K Ray Chaudhuri is Professor in Neurology/Movement Disorders and Consultant Neurologist at King s College Hospital and King s College, London and Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience, London, an Academic Health Sciences Centre and also principal investigator at the MRC centre for neurodegeneration research at King s College, London. He is the medical director of the National Parkinson Foundation International Centre of Excellence at King s College, London. He sits on the Nervous Systems Committee of UK Department of Health, National Institute of Health Research and also serves as cochairman of the appointments/liaison committee of the International Parkinson and Movement Disorder Society (IPMDS) and is currently serving as the member of the scientific programme committee of the IPMDS. He is the Chairman of the IPMDS Parkinson s disease (PD) non motor study group. He serves on the task force of practice parameter group for PD and restless legs syndrome (RLS) and more recently Non Motor Symptoms of Parkinson s, American Academy Neurology. He is the Editor in Chief of Nature Parkinson s disease journal and the European Editor of Basal Ganglia and is in the editorial board of Parkinsonism and Related Disorders and Journal of Parkinson s Disease. Prof. Per Odin DEPARTMENT OF NEUROLOGY, CENTRAL HOSPITAL BREMERHAVEN, GERMANY LUND UNIVERSITY, SWEDEN Professor Odin finished medical school at the Uppsala University, Sweden 1982, then presented his PhD thesis at the same university in He became specialist in Neurology 1993 at the Lund University, Sweden and got his first Professorship at the Medical School Hannover, Germany in Odin is now head of the department of Neurology at the Central Hospital in Bremerhaven, Germany and at the same time has a Professorship in Neurology at the Lund University, Sweden. Odin has focused his interest on Movement Disorders since 1987 and his main research areas concern continuous dopaminergic stimulation, pump therapies for Parkinson s disease (PD), non-motor PD symptoms and cell transplantation in PD. Odin is chair of the Scandinavian Movement Disorder Society and board member of the Competence Network Parkinson s disease in Germany. Odin is scientifically responsible for the development of new Swedish Evidence-Based Guidelines for Parkinson at the Board of Health and Welfare. 4 Parkinson s Disease International Conference 2017
5 International Faculty Prof. David J Brooks PROFESSOR NEWCASTLE UNIVERSITY, UK AARHUS UNIVERSITY, DENMARK David J Brooks MD DSc FRCP(UK) FMedSci (UK) is Professor of PET Clinical Science at Newcastle University, UK and Professor of Neurology at Aarhus University, Denmark. He is a member of the Alzheimer Research UK Grant Review Board, the Biosciences Advisory Panel of the Alzheimer Society UK, and the Singapore NMRC Grant Review Board. He has served on the UK Medical Research Council Neuroscience and Mental Health Board ( ), the Wellcome Trust Neuroscience panel , and the research advisory pnels of the UK Parkinson s Disease Society, the German Dementia and Parkinson Kompetenz Networks, German Leibniz AB, the Austrian Science Foundation (KLIF) and the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson s Disease Research. He was Chairman of the Scientific Issues Committee of the Movement Disorder Society ( ) and a Director of the International Society of Cerebral Blood Flow and Metabolism ( ). He was Chairman of the Council of Management of the UK Parkinson s Disease Society He is an Associate Editor of Brain and serves on the Editorial Boards of the Journal of Parkinson s Disease, Parkinsonism and Related Disorders, Basal Ganglia, Synapse, Journal of Neuroimaging, Journal of Neurotherapeutics, Molecular Imaging and Biology, Clincal Neurology and Neurosurgery, Current Neurology and Neuroscience Reports, and Current Trends in Neurology. He was previously on the Editorial Boards of the Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery, and Psychiatry, Journal of Neural Transmission, and Movement Disorders. In 2001 he was elected a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Science, UK and a corresponding member of the American Neurology Association. In 2002 he was invited to give the Stan Fahn Lecture at the International Congress of Movement Disorders, Miami, in 2003 the George Cotzias Lecture in Madrid, in 2004 the Charles E Wilson Lecture, the Psychobiology Institute, Jerusalem March 2004, in 2005 the Kuhl-Lassen lecture at the Society of Nuclear Medicine, Toronto, and in 2006 the Sprague lecture at UC Irvine, and in 2011 a Presidental Lecture at the World Congress of Parkinson s Disease, Shanghai. His research involves the use of PET and MRI to aid the diagnosis and study the progression of Alzheimer s and Parkinson s disease and to validate their use as biomarkers in therapeutic trials. To date, he has published over 400 reports in peer reviewed journals, including Nature and Science, and has an h index of 106. His research is supported by grants from the UK Medical Research Council, Alzheimer s Research Trust, Parkinson s UK, the Michael J Fox Foundation, Danish Council for Independent Research, Lundbeck Foundation, and industry. 6 International Faculty Dr Peter Fletcher DEPARTMENT OF OLD AGE MEDICINE GLOUCESTERSHIRE HOSPITALS NHS FOUNDATION TRUST THE UNITED KINGDOM Dr Peter Fletcher is a Consultant Physician in the Department of Old Age Medicine at Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in the UK. He specialises in Movement Disorders and shares service delivery with colleagues in Old Age Medicine, Neurology and Psychiatry as well as colleagues from nursing and the allied health professions. From a clinical base in Cheltenham, he runs 4 clinics on 3 sites across a very rural County. He is a founder member and Academic Director of the UK Neurology Academy and has contributed to all its Parkinson s Academy Masterclasses from their inception in 2002 to date. He is past Chair of the British Geriatrics Society Movement Disorders Section and is President of the Cheltenham branch of Parkinson s UK. He was the first chair and remains a member of the Education group of the newly formed Parkinson s UK Excellence Network. He became a Trustee of the Cure Parkinson s Trust and Chair of its Patient Initiatives Committee in He is co-chair of the 4th World Parkinson Congress in September 2016 in the USA. He is an Honorary Reader and past Academy Medical Dean at the University of Bristol. He has an MSc in Medical Education and leads for the University of Bristol Medical School on interprofessional learning and personal and professional development in the curriculum as well as consultation and procedural skills. He examines third, fourth and fifth year medical students for the University of Bristol. Alexandra Rizos NATIONAL PARKINSON FOUNDATION PARKINSON S INTERNATIONAL CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE KING S COLLEGE LONDON Alexandra Rizos trained as a scientist with a degree in human biology focussed on cell biology, immunology and genetics at Philips University in Marburg, Germany and subsequently worked in Frankfurt (Germany), Dublin (Ireland) and Munich (Germany) mainly in the field of Parkinson s before accepting the role of European Research Manager for EUROPAR in EUROPAR is dedicated to academic research in non motor aspects of Parkinson s, improving care for people with Parkinson s and delivering excellence in clinical research across Europe. EUROPAR is formally affiliated to the European Parkinson s Disease Association (EPDA), as well as the International Parkinson s and Movement Disorders Society (IPMDS). Alexandra took up her post in February 2011 and is now based at the National Parkinson s Foundation centre of excellence at King s College Hospital in London and also has an international role as the co-ordinator of the IPMDS non motor PD study group. She has written reviews and papers on non motor aspects of Parkinson s and continuous drug delivery therapies and presents work related to her EUROPAR role regularly at international conferences, e. g. International Parkinson s and Movement Disorders Society meetings or the World Congresses on Parkinson's Disease and Related Disorders. Alexandra also manages research on behalf of the London South Nervous Systems sub-speciality group across the UK and is leading CRISP (Community for Research Involvement and Support for people with Parkinson s), a patient and public involvement group at King s. 6 Parkinson s Disease International Conference 2017
7 International Faculty Dr Anna Sauerbier NATIONAL PARKINSON FOUNDATION PARKINSON S INTERNATIONAL CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE KING S COLLEGE LONDON Dr. Anna Sauerbier is a clinical research fellow to Professor K Ray Chaudhuri at the National Parkinson Foundation Parkinson s International Centre of Excellence, King s College London. Her research interest is the non-motor aspects of movement disorders (clinical and imaging) in particular Parkinson s disease and restless legs syndrome, with a focus on the impact of ethnicity. During her medical studies at the Justus-Liebig University in Giessen, she has successfully completed her MD thesis (Dr med). She has already published more than 20 peer-reviewed papers, book chapters and has presented at several international meetings. Furthermore she was awarded several scholarships and has received prizes including runners up price during a poster competition at the Neuroscience symposium at King s College London in 2014, the poster price for the poster Double vision in Parkinson s disease: impact on activities of daily living during the congress of the German Neurology Society in Munich, Germany, 2014 and the award for the Most robust study design at the designing clinical research course, King s college London, UK, She is currently working on her PhD project titled: Range and nature of non-motor symptoms in people with Parkinson s: exploring possible ethnic differences between white Caucasian, black African/Caribbean and South Asian population in London, UK. at King s college in London. She is an active member of the European Academy of Neurology-Residents and Research Fellow Section (EAN-RRFS), a member of the European Academy of Neurology as well as the Association of British Neurologists, an associate member of the International Parkinson and Movement disorder society (IPMDS) and one of the coordinators of the IPMDS Nonmotor study group. Prof. Pramod Kumar Pal HEAD OF NEUROLOGY, NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF MENTAL HEALTH & NEUROSCIENCES (NIMHANS) BANGALORE, INDIA Dr. Pramod Kumar Pal is currently Professor & Head of Neurology and the Program Director of the post-doctoral Fellowship Program in Movement Disorders, Department of Neurology, National Institute of Mental Health & Neurosciences (NIMHANS), Bangalore, India. Worked as a Clinical Fellow in Movement Disorders at the Neurodegenerative Disorders Centre, Vancouver and in Electrophysiology in Movement Disorders, Human Motor Control and Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation at Toronto Western Hospital, Toronto Canada. His areas of interest are Parkinson s disease, dystonias, essential tremor, progressive supranuclear palsy, psychogenic movement disorders, Spinocerebellar ataxias, Human Motor physiology and Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, and advanced neuroimaging (structural and functional) and cognition in movement disorders. He has more than 165 publications in National and International journals and Books and recipient of the Dr. S. JANAKI MEMORIAL ORATION 2014, NAMS. He is the founding Secretary of the Movement Disorders Society of India (MDSI). He is also a Member of the Education Committee of International Association of Parkinsonism & Related Disorders and the Movement Disorder Society- Asian & Oceanian Section, Rare Movement Disorders Study Group of MDS, International Editorial Board of Movement Disorders journal, Parkinson s Research Alliance of India, and the Parkinson s Disease Society of Karnataka. 8 International Faculty Prof. C Goetz DIRECTOR OF MOVEMENT DISORDERS PROGRAM RUSH UNIVERSITY MEDICAL CENTER CHICAGO Christopher G. Goetz, MD, is professor in the Department of Neurological Sciences and Pharmacology and serves as director of the Movement Disorders Program at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. Dr. Goetz is also the United Parkinson Foundation Professor of Neurology. Dr. Goetz is a senior Fulbright Scholar and worked for two years at the College de France in Paris. He has published over 400 peer-reviewed articles and more than 200 book chapters in the field. He has also published and coauthored 14 books and monographs. He has been one of two co-editors-in-chief of the Movement Disorders journal, and is the former editor-in-chief of Clinical Neuropharmacology. He is currently an officer of the International Parkinson and Movement Disorder Society (MDS). Dr. Goetz s major interests are the pharmacology of various movement disorders and the development of rating scales for measurement of disease impact in movement disorders. He led the MDS Task Force to develop a new version of the Unified Parkinson s Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS), termed the MDS-UPDRS, unveiled in He also developed the Unified Dyskinesia Rating Scale (UDysRS) with Dr. Stebbins and leads the current MDS program to develop validated official non-english translations of both the MDS-UPDRS and UDysRS. Dr E.K Tan NATIONAL NEUROSCIENCE INSTITUTE DUKE-NUS MEDICAL SCHOOL SINGAPORE Dr EK Tan is a senior consultant neurologist and director of Research at the National Neuroscience Institute and a Professor at Duke-NUS medical school. Dr Tan is one of the founding members of the Asian Oceanic section of the International Movement Disorders Society (MDS) and has served in many committees in MDS. He is a member of the American Neurological Association. Dr Tan is an associate editor of European Journal of Neurology, Parkinsonism and Related Disorders, Basal Ganglia, Journal of Parkinson s disease. His primary research interests are in genetic epidemiology, the molecular mechanism underpinning disease causing genes, and therapeutics in movement disorders. Prof. Lim Shen-Yang PROFESSOR OF NEUROLOGY, UNIVERSITY OF MALAYA KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA Dr. Lim Shen-Yang is a Professor of Neurology at the University of Malaya in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. He obtained his MBBS and research MD degrees from the University of Melbourne, and undertook Fellowship training in Melbourne, Australia and Toronto, Canada. Dr. Lim has published many articles on Parkinson's & related disorders in prestigious international journals. Dr. Lim is the current Chair of the Malaysian Movement Disorders Council and a Medical Advisor to the Malaysian PD Association. Internationally, he is the Education Committee Chair and Secretary-Elect of the International Parkinson & Movement Disorder Society (MDS), Asian-Oceanian Section. 9 National Faculty Prof. Simon Lewis PROFESSOR OF COGNITIVE NEUROSCIENCE UNIVERSITY OF SYDNEY. Simon Lewis is an NHMRC-ARC Dementia Fellow who works as a Consultant Neurologist at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and is Professor of Cognitive Neuroscience at the University of Sydney. He is the Clinical Director of the Ageing Brain Clinic and Director of the Parkinson's Disease Research Clinic at the Brain & Mind Research Institute and heads the NSW Movement Disorders Brain Donor program. He has published over 140 peer review papers, 2 books and 5 book chapters and has attracted over $5 Million in funding from various sources including the NHMRC, ARC and Michael J Fox Foundation to support his research interests targeting quality of life in neurodegenerative diseases. Dr Victor Fung DEPARTMENT OF NEUROLOGY, WESTMEAD HOSPITAL Dr Victor Fung is Clinical Associate Professor at Sydney Medical School, The University of Sydney and Director of the Movement Disorders Unit, Department of Neurology, Westmead Hospital. He is Treasurer-Elect of the International Parkinson and Movement Disorder Society, serves on the Dystonia Task Force, and is the past Chair of its Congress Scientific Program Committee. He is a past-president of the Movement Disorder Society of Australia. He is a member of the Parkinson's Australia Scientific Committee, Parkinson's NSW Advisory Board and Dystonia Network Australia Scientific Advisory Committee. He serves on the Editorial Board of Movement Disorders, npj Parkinson's Disease, the Journal of Clinical Movement Disorders, Movement Disorders Clinical Practice, F1000 Research, and Basal Ganglia. 10 National Faculty Prof. Scott Whyte DIRECTOR OF NEUROLOGY CENTRAL COAST LOCAL HEALTH DISTRICT Scott is a Neurologist and Geriatrician who has worked in Melbourne, Concord and for the last 15 years, at Gosford and Wyong Hospitals. He wrote his PhD on Biochemical aspects of the amyloid precursor protein of Alzheimer s disease. He has had numerous papers published in mainstream journals and is involved in a number of clinical trials currently underway in the Neurology Department at Gosford Hospital. He has a special interest in neurodegenerative diseases, with his main focus being Parkinson s disease. Scott runs a weekly multidisciplinary Parkinson s disease and Movement Disorder Clinic at Gosford Hospital, both face to face and by telehealth. He is a Clinical Associate Professor attached to the School of Public Health and Medicine at Newcastle University. Clyde Campbell CEO, SHAKE IT UP FOUNDATION AUSTRALIA Shake It Up Australia Foundation is a not-for-profit organisation established in 2011 and in partnership with The Michael J. Director of Movement Disorder Service, JHH. He has in interest in Movement Disorders, Neurophysiology and the use of Botulinum Toxin in the treatment of Neurological Disorders. Dr Michael Katekar VMO JOHN HUNTER HOSPITAL, AUSTRALIA Dr Michael Katekar is a VMO at John Hunter, and has been in private practice as a Neurologist since He has particular interests in vertigo and balance disorders, and clinical electrophysiology. He has a conjoint appointment at the University of Newcastle. Together with the University team, he has recent publications in the field of cervicogenic vertigo, and ongoing collaboration with the neurosciences. Dr Elizabeth Pepper CLINICAL DIRECTOR, STROKE SERVICES CALVARY MATER, NEWCASTLE. Trained in Movement Disorder at Department of Neurology, Westmead Hospital. Evelyn has been in this role for 15 years. Evelyn is involved in a weekly movement disorder clinic, reviews inpatients and outpatients, has established a DBS clinic at local hospital with Neurologist, performs home visit assessments, drug challenges, monitors medications changes, offers a phone support service, face-to-face counseling, telehealth and in education. Dr Venkatesh Krishnamurthy PHD PROGRAMME UNIVERSITY OF NEWCASTLE, AUSTRALLIA Dr Venkatesh (Kris) Krishnamurthy is a consultant stroke and vascular neurologist who is interested in managing all aspects of adult General Neurology, including Headaches, Epilepsy & Parkinson s disease. He moved Newcastle in 2012 and has been working at John Hunter Hospital as a Cerebrovascular Research Fellow and is currently involved in a full-time PhD programme through the University of Newcastle, with the principal focus of his research being Advanced Imaging in Stroke.
