1 6th Annual Mid-Atlantic H O S P I T A L M E D I C I N E SYMPOSIUM Mastering the Care of the Hospitalized Patient Friday & Saturday October 28-29, 2011 Hatch Auditorium New York, NY Course Director Co-Directors Brian Markoff, MD, SFHM Ramiro Jervis, MD, FHM Visit NYC in the Fall! Sponsored by An SHM-affiliated Department of Medicine Meeting

2 PROGRAM GOALS Hospitalists are increasingly called upon to provide care to severely ill patients in an evidence-based, cost-effective, and patient-centered manner. Across the nation hospitalists have stepped up to meet these great challenges. These successes have led to greater demands, including being asked to provide care for critically ill patients and patients who had historically been cared for solely by subspecialists, such as patients with acute stroke, hip fracture, and HIV. In the face of these demands, hospitalists strive to become Master Clinicians to be able to diagnose and manage complex diseases, incorporate high-quality evidence, and provide the individualized care that patients and caregivers expect. Our faculty consists of nationally and internationally renowned experts who will present lectures and workshops to ensure all attendees develop expertise in essential topics. Dr. Mark Williams, Past-President of SHM and Leader of the BOOST Initiative to decrease readmissions, will be our Keynote Speaker and will inform all of best practices in Transitions of Care. Our annual Update in Hospital Medicine session will summarize the most important trials impacting our field over the past year; Radiology for the Hospitalist will enhance skill at recognizing important radiographic findings; and plenary lectures on ARF, Cirrhosis Management, and CHF will increase expertise in common serious conditions. Hospitalists also play a central role in ensuring patients receive high-quality care in an efficient manner and will increasingly be called upon to enhance the quality and cost-effectiveness of care in the era of healthcare reform. Our lectures and workshops will allow attendees to develop expertise in these key areas and enhance their value to their group and hospital. Our highly rated WORKSHOPS provide participants with a choice of Three Tracks in which to gain expertise. Concentrate in one of these tracks to develop expertise or mix-and-match tracks to experience a greater variety of topics: (1) HOSPITALIST AS GENERALIST Includes core topics such as Glycemic Control and Pain Management. (2) HOSPITALIST AS SPECIALIST Develop expertise in Stroke, HIV, and Critical Care (3) ENHANCING QUALITY & VALUE Includes Using PDSA Cycles to Effectively Lead Change, What You Need to Know about Value-Based Purchasing, and How to Improve Your Patient Satisfaction Scores. m3 WORKSHOP TRACKS! Hospitalist as Generalist Hospitalist as Specialist Enhancing Quality & Value Come to increase your knowledge of core topics, learn more of subspecialty conditions, enhance your QI skills, increase your value to your hospital, and network with colleagues. In short, come to continue the quest to become a Master Clinician! PROGRAM OBJECTIVES At the conclusion of this CME activity, the participant should be able to: Diagnose the cause of acute renal failure and provide effective treatment Prescribe psychiatric medications safely while avoiding common and serious side effects Recognize common pitfalls in the transition process from hospital to home and enact strategies to minimize the risk of readmission Utilize PDSA cycles to enhance the quality of care and patient safety at their hospital Assess the impact of Value Based Purchasing at their hospital and how hospitalists can align with the C-Suite to achieve the needed targets Utilize patient satisfaction techniques to improve the perception of patients of the care they have received and consequently improve the doctor-patient relationship WHO SHOULD ATTEND? Hospitalists, General Internists, Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants, House Staff, Medical Students. ACCREDITATION is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
