4 GMEC/AHEC of SWVA in Conjunction with presents Clinical Care of the Older Adult in Appalachia Friday, March 8, 2013 Agenda Cedar Bluff, VA About This Southwest Virginia AHEC, in collaboration with GMEC and ETSU, proposed to offer a live one-day interprofessional conference, modeled after Head for the Hills, focusing on the application of geriatric principles in the traditional primary care practice. The goal is to provide up-to-date information about care for older adults to at least 50 primary care practitioners in the Cumberland Plateau Health/Planning District. This educational offering is designed for nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, physicians, pharmacists and other professionals providing direct services to older Virginians. The Virginia Center on Aging, under the auspices of the Commonwealth of Virginia, has allocated the sum of: $9,100 to: Southwest Virginia AHEC (Area Health Education Center). Activity Director Target Audience Overall Objectives Location Tom Townsend, MD, Professor, Family Medicine, Quillen College of Medicine, East Tennessee State University, Primary Care Physicians, Nurse Practitioners, PAs and Pharmacists practicing in SW VA and Central Appalachia. As a result of attending this activity, the participant will be able to: Differentiate between dementia and depression in the geriatric patient, describing appropriate management for each Address the scope and focus of poly pharmacy in the elderly, describing strategies to address in the primary care setting Describe the appropriate assessment for and of falls in the elderly, and the appropriate management strategies to be employed with the patient and family Describe the latest pharmacotherapy management of geriatric diabetic patients, including the difference in the management of the geriatric population from younger adults Differentiate the diagnosis and treatment of the major forms of dementia Diagnose patients at risk for osteoporosis and ostopenia Describe the patient presentation, differential diagnosis, and management of Post Herpetic Neuralgia and Spinal Compression Fractures in the elderly Appalachian Agency for Senior Citizens 216 College Ridge Road, Wardell Industrial Park, Cedar Bluff, VA Phone

Attendees who want to purchase a paper copy of the presentations can do so for $15.00 (payable at the door).
