2 DIABETES UPDATE AND ADVANCES IN ENDOCRINOLOGY AND METABOLISM The Diabetes Update section on Thursday focuses on new ideas and therapies relevant to patients with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. Advances in Endocrinology and on Friday and Saturday will provide the clinician with updated, pragmatic information about the management of common endocrinologic and metabolic problems, as well as insight into important current areas in clinical research. Formal presentations will be accompanied by question and answer periods with general discussion. Clinical cases will focus on common endocrine problems encountered in clinical practice. TARGET AUDIENCE This course is intended for general internists, family physicians, general practitioners, surgeons, nurses, pharmacists, and other allied health professionals. It is expected that the participants will gain new life skills and strategies to manage these disorders. EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES DIABETES UPDATE At the completion of this program, course participants should be able to: Use the newly introduced drugs to control glucose levels in Type 2 diabetes; Develop protocols to improve glucose control in diabetic patients in the hospital; Acknowledge approaches being used to identify diabetes causing genes and how this information might be used to customize treatment; Individualize therapies for obesity; Appreciate the range of autoimmune diseases that occur in people with diabetes and when to screen; Manage commonly encountered diabetes problems; Appreciate the status of therapies designed to arrest the autoimmune process in Type 1 diabetes. ADVANCES IN ENDOCRINOLOGY & METABOLISM At the completion of this program, course participants should be able to: Use the new guidelines to evaluate and treat patients with primary hyperparathyroidism; Advise their patients on the optimal amount of calcium and vitamin D that they should consume; Identify thyroid nodules on neck ultrasound that require further evaluation; Manage commonly encountered thyroid disorders; Assess a patient with Cushing s syndrome; Manage a patient with a neuroendocrine tumor of the pancreas; Appropriately use testosterone therapy; Manage commonly encountered adrenal and pituitary disorders; Counsel patients on available infertility treatments; Identify and treat patients with polycystic ovary syndrome; Identify and treat different kinds of lipid disorders; Manage commonly encountered lipid disorders. ACCREDITATION Physicians The University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine (UCSF) is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians. UCSF designates this live activity for a maximum of AMA PRA Category 1 Credits TM. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. This activity meets the requirements under California Assembly Bill 1195, continuing education and cultural and linguistic competency. Nurses For the purpose of recertification, the American Nurses Credentialing Center accepts AMA PRA Category 1 Credit TM issued by organizations accredited by the ACCME. Pharmacists The California Board of Pharmacy accepts as continuing professional education those courses that meet the standard of relevance to pharmacy practice and have been approved for AMA PRA Category 1 Credit TM. Registered Dieticians The Commission on Dietetic Registration accepts as continuing professional education those courses that meet the standard of relevance to Dietetic practice and have been approved for AMA PRA Category 1 Credit TM. Family Physicians Application for CME credit has been filed with the American Academy of Family Physicians. Determination of credit is pending. Geriatric Medicine The approved credits shown above include credits toward meeting the requirement under California Assembly Bill 1820, Geriatric Medicine. Physician Assistants AAPA accepts category 1 credit from AOACCME, Prescribed Credit from AAFP, and AMA Category 1 Credit TM for the PRA for organizations accredited by the ACCME.
