LOCAL HOST Olivier Lanlo IMPORTANT NOTE Attendance throughout the whole course is mandatory PURPOSE In collaboration with IFEC (Institut Franco-Européen de Chiropraxie), world class faculty will teach participants the necessary skills to critically appraise the quality of the spine literature which is very relevant to engage in an evidence-based practice. STRUCTURE OF THE COURSE This course will include three one-hour lectures and one three-hour workshop. The lectures will include presentations where study designs, biases and critical appraisal methods will be discussed. The workshop will include a 1.5 hour group session where a published study will be critically appraised under the guidance of a faculty member. The course will conclude with a structured group discussion about the validity of the reviewed paper. 2

4 SCHEDULE The course will take place from 09:00 to 16:30 including the practical workshop. COURSE OBJECTIVES This course will provide participants with the necessary skills to critically appraise the quality of the spine literature. Specifically, the course will introduce basic study designs and discuss the main threats to the validity of clinical studies. Learning methods include didactic lectures and a workshop. Recently published papers will be used in the workshop. The topics covered in the course include: randomized clinical trails, cohorts studies, case-series, case study, selection bias, measurement bias and confounding. Participants will learn to use a critical appraisal tool to assess the quality of randomized control trials and cohort studies. LEARNING OUTCOMES Upon successful completion of this course the participant will be able to: Identify the study design used in a published article. Define selection bias, measurement bias and confounding. Critically appraise a published paper using a standardized critical appraisal tool and identify the main threats to its validity. Discuss the validity of a published paper. 4
