3 Keynote Speaker Mathilda Karel Spak Speaker Vera Bril, MD, FRCP(C) Dr. Vera Bril is a professor of medicine (neurology) at the University of Toronto, medical director of the Krembil Neurosciences Program at University Health Network, director of neurology at University Health Network and Mount Sinai Hospital and the Krembil Family Chair in neurology. She has particular expertise in the diagnosis and management of patients with complex neuromuscular disorders. Her research interests have centered on the diagnosis and evidence-based treatment of myasthenia gravis, inflammatory polyneuropathies and diabetic sensorimotor polyneuropathy. Course Chairs Michael Benatar, MD Dr. Benatar is a professor of neurology, and epidemiology and public health at the University of Miami, Miller School of Medicine. He is also the chief of the Neuromuscular Division and the first incumbent of the Walter Bradley Chair in ALS Research. His primary clinical interest is in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), myasthenia gravis and electromyography. His primary research focus is on ALS (including clinical trials, genetics and biomarker development), and myasthenia gravis. Course Description The 2016 Neuromuscular Colloquium provides an academic forum for regional and national physicians who specialize entirely, or to a significant degree, in neuromuscular medicine. This activity is designed to encourage an atmosphere of collaboration and interaction between the various neuromuscular specialists in the region. It is a forum to discuss the latest topics and advances in neuromuscular medicine and review interesting and challenging cases, with several live patient presentations. Such activities are likely to improve patient care because they promote closer research collaboration and the development of new research projects between the various groups and institutions. Learning Objective After completing the learning activity, the participant should be able to: Describe current diagnostic and management strategies in chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathies, and recognize atypical manifestations especially in diabetic patients. Identify best outcome measures when assessing clinical and research outcomes in myasthenia gravis using current treatment and management strategies. Identify different patterns of clinical involvement in patients with neuromuscular disorders; recognize systemic and medical complications in these patients; understand current guidelines for management of patients with muscular dystrophies, Pompe disease, spinal muscular atrophy and amyloidosis.
