1 This inventory is intended to provide an overview of some the training and education programs focused on dementia and available for health care providers. Many of the resources noted in this document are also found in more detail in the Behavioural Education and Training Supports Inventory (BETSI). Behavioural Supports Ontario (BSO) has published the Behavioural Education and Training Supports Inventory (BETSI) Decision Making Framework, an education/training decision making tool and program inventory, for anyone interested in providing safe, quality patient- centered care for older adults with responsive behaviors. BETSI assists providers, agencies and facilities by strengthening the capacity of planners to choose the most appropriate of education programs and effectively support the application of new knowledge into practice; enabling teams to provide clients with the right care, at the right time and in the right place. The BSO Capacity Building Roadmap and BETSI Framework should be used by those who need to make decisions about what education is required to manage and better serve the target population, and also by those who provide collaborative care for the target population and make education- related decisions. Indicators/ Program Philosophy To provide staff with education on how to use a person- centered, compassionate and gentle persuasive approach and to respond respectfully, with confidence and skill to challenging behaviours associated with dementia Person- centered, Person centered approach that maximizes remaining evidence- based abilities at every stage of cognitive impairment and humanistic care is critical to well being. Health is beyond the absence of disease and includes quality of life, independence and self- determination Prevention and early intervention To develop a common knowledge base, language, values, and approach to providing care for people with Alzheimer s disease and other dementias. Supports knowledge translation & improved communication with PIECES trained Registered Staff Academic program designed to build on the previous knowledge, skill and aptitude of the post- diploma health and/or social service field in order to increase competency and skill in caring for those with dementia.
