3 Welcome ESOR Committee Scientific/Educational Director Nicholas Gourtsoyiannis, Athens/GR Committee Members Dear Colleagues, The European School of Radiology has become an integrated and multi-dynamic initiative that aspires to extend teaching resources throughout Europe and worldwide, to assist in harmonising radiological education and to enhance the scientific profile of radiology. One of the main ESOR activities is the GALEN project currently in partnership with Bracco, offering foundation and advanced courses. All courses have been designed around an established course format, combining lectures and interactive workshops, offered by internationally renowned European experts. The courses have been specifically structured with the trainee radiologist in mind and deal with subjects of practical importance; they have an interactive character, encouraging informal and free communication between participants and lecturers. They are also supported by an online self-assessment test. The GALEN Foundation Courses aimed at residents in their 1 st, 2 nd or 3 rd year of training in radiology, are primarily assigned to the geographic area of Central and South-eastern Europe. One such course will be offered in 2013, focused on neuroradiology. The GALEN Advanced Courses are aimed at 4 th and 5 th year residents and recently board-certified radiologists from all around Europe. Four such courses are organised in 2013, structured along the lines of the most recent advances in cross-sectional imaging. These are focused on cardiac, breast, musculoskeletal and oncologic imaging. In this brochure you will find the relevant programmes and venues. We would like to emphatically encourage you to participate. Since the courses are very popular, you should book your place quickly. Its initial location at the north eastern corner of the tip of the Gulf of Smyrna is called Old Smyrna, and the city after the move to a new location on the slopes of Mount Pagos Kadifekale at the time of Alexander the Great, constitute Smyrna proper. Today the heart of that new city forms the great area of Izmir Agora Open Air Museum. Izmir metropolitan area extends along the outlying waters of the Gulf of Izmir, by the Aegean Sea. The city is the inheritor of almost 3,500 years of urban past, and possibly up to that much more in terms of advanced human settlement patterns. Izmir had the first port for export and is widely regarded as one of the most liberal Turkish cities in terms of values, ideology, lifestyle and dynamism as well as gender roles. The city hosts an international arts festival and the Izmir International Fair, which is only one among the city s many exhibition events. Education in partnership with Bracco

The so called Old Town (Altstadt) of Salzburg has internationally renowned baroque architecture and one of the best-preserved city centres in the north of the Alps. In 1997 Salzburg was listed as UNESCO World Heritage Site. Salzburg is famous for being the birthplace of 18 th -century composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. His mother was born at St. Gilgen on the Wolfgangsee and his father in Augsburg, Germany. In the mid-20 th century, the city was the setting for parts of the musical and film The Sound of Music. It was based on the true story of Maria von Trapp, she took up with an aristocratic family and fled the Austrian Anschluss. Salzburg has three universities and a large population of students. Famous buildings of classical modernism and in particular the post-war modernism are frequently encountered in Salzburg. One example is the famous festival opera house, by Clemens Holzmeister, where parts of the famous Salzburger Festspiele take place. One wellknown act is Jederman that takes place in the open-air theatre on the Domplatz. Education in partnership with Bracco
