4 Community Service Related to Professional Work: Year Position/Title Role Institution 2006 Assistant Lecturer Screening of rural population 2008 Assistant Lecturer Screening of Sinai Bedwins Mansoura of Medicine Mansoura of Medicine School School Part 2: Research, Teaching and Clinical Contributions: Master degree research project: Risk Factors for Secondary Membrane Formation after Removal of Pediatric Cataract: Pediatric cataract is a challenging ophthalmic problem; it may lead to a varying degree of visual and developmental disability. Surgery for pediatric cataract differs from the adult onset or senile cataract in many aspects, preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative, the problem under investigation was the development of posterior capsule opacification and secondary membrane formation which eventually occurs in most operated eyes. The research studied different items that may contribute to this problem. The items studied were: age, sex, type of cataract, posterior capsule management, biomaterial of intraocular lens implanted and anterior vitreous management. The study concluded that intact posterior capsule left is still the main risk factor for occurrence of secondary opacification. Biochemical study of Acute Inflammatory Proteins in Diabetic Retinopathy: The aim of the study was to investigate the relationship between diabetic retinopathy and Monocyte Chemotactic Protein- 1 (MCP- 1) in the aqueous humor and serum of diabetic patients, also to assess the levels of serum nitrite and C- reactive protein (CRP) in the disease. The study reached a conclusion that there is a strong relation between MCP- 1 and pathogenesis of the disease, its level in aqueous could be used as a marker for the disease rather than its severity. Nitric oxide serves as a useful marker for the diagnosis of the disease as well as its progression.

5 Ph.D. research project: Neuroretinal Cell Replacement by Stem Cell Transplantation: A study that was accomplished at the Schepens Eye Research Institute, Massachusetts Eye and Ear infirmary/ Harvard Medical School. The main objective is to study the role of Human Retinal Progenitor Cells in repairing the damaged or dystrophic retinal elements. We achieved promising results in terms of ERG response after transplanting human retinal progenitors in an animal model of retinal degeneration. hrpcs showed ability to integrate into retinal layers and differentiate into photoreceptors and were considered relatively safe in terms of tumorogenesis. Ongoing Research Projects: Study of the effect of some antioxidants on diabetic retinopathy. Effect of ranibizumab on diabetic macular edema. Management of cystoid macular edema after cataract surgery. Effect of Multiple Sclerosis on the retinal ganglion cell layer. Genetic and biochemical studies for keratoconic corneas.
