4 Faculty Andrew Saykin, PsyD, is the Raymond C. Beeler Professor of Radiology and Imaging Sciences and Director of both the Indiana Alzheimer Disease Center (IADC), and the IU Center for Neuroimaging, Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM). The IADC is one of 27 centers sponsored by the National Institute on Aging. Dr. Saykin is a neuropsychologist whose research focuses on using advanced brain imaging and genetics to understand disorders affecting memory and cognition. Advances in brain imaging have become increasingly important for the early detection of disorders leading to dementia. Bernice A. Pescosolido, PhD, is Distinguished Professor of Sociology at IU Bloomington, Director of the Indiana Consortium for Mental Health Services Research (ICMHSR), and Co-Director of the newly established Indiana University Network Science Institute (IUNI). She has focused her research and teaching on social issues in health, illness, and healing. More specifically, her research addresses how social networks connect individuals to their communities and to institutional structures, providing the "wires" through which people s attitudes and actions are influenced. Her research encompasses three basic areas: health care services, stigma, and suicide research. In the early 1990s, she developed the Network-Episode Model, which was designed to focus on how individuals come to recognize and respond to the onset of health problems, and use health care services. It has provided new insights to understanding the patterns and pathways to care, adherence to treatment and the outcome of health care. As a result, she has served on advisory panels at the NRC, NIMH, NCI, NHLBI, NIDRR, OBSSR, and presented at congressional briefings. Olaf Sporns, PhD, is Distinguished Professor in the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences; Provost Professor, Robert H. Shaffer Chair of the Computational Cognitive Neuroscience Lab, and Co-Director, IU Network Science Institute (IUNI), at IU Bloomington. After receiving an undergraduate degree in biochemistry, he earned a PhD in neuroscience at Rockefeller University and then conducted postdoctoral work at The Neurosciences Institute in New York and San Diego. His main research area is theoretical and computational neuroscience, with a focus on complex brain networks. He has authored over 160 peer-reviewed publications as well as the recent books Networks of the Brain and Discovering the Human Connectome, both published by MIT Press. Dr. Sporns was awarded a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship in 2011 and elected Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in Joaquín Goñi, PhD is an Associate Research Scientist at Indiana University Network Science Institute and Adjunct Associate Research Professor of Radiology and Imaging Sciences at the IUSM. Also, he is an investigator for the Center for Neuroimaging and the IADC. Dr. Goñi earned a PhD from the University of Navarra School of Sciences (Spain) in 2008 and completed a post-doctoral fellowship in the Functional Neuroimaging Laboratory in the Center for Applied Medical Research (Spain). From 2011 to 2014, he was in Dr. Olaf Sporns' laboratory as a Research Associate in the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences at IU Bloomington. As a computational neuroscientist with expertise in complex systems, his current research is focused on the application of frameworks such as graph theory, information theory or fractal theory in neuroscience with a specific focus in neuroimaging. Currently, Dr. Goñi's research is focused on the human connectome, including network analyses of structural and functional connectivity during different tasks under various disease conditions, with an emphasis on neurodegenerative diseases. Vijay Ramanan, PhD, is a post doctoral researcher and 4th year MD student at IUSM. His interests are in understanding the genetic predictors of Alzheimer s disease and other neurodegenerative diseases and normal cognitive aging. His research utilizes neuroimaging, blood and CSF biomarkers, and cognitive assessment phenotypes from several large human study cohorts. Li Shen, PhD, is an Associate Professor of Radiology and Imaging Sciences at IUSM. He is a member of the Center for Neuroimaging, the Center for Computational Biology and Bioinformatics, and the Stark Neurosciences Research Institute at IUSM. He is an elected member of the MICCAI Society Board of Directors. His research interests include medical image computing, bioinformatics, data mining, and network science. The central theme of his lab is focused on developing computational and informatics methods for integrative analysis of multimodal imaging data, high throughput "omics" data, fluid and cognitive biomarker data, and rich biological knowledge such as pathways and networks, with applications to various complex disorders. The ultimate goal is to improve mechanistic understanding of disease processes and treatment responses for early diagnosis and treatment for complex disorders.
