1 Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging Correlative Imaging Council Business Plan FY2015 (Oct 1, 2014 Sept 30, 2015) 1) Executive Summary The Correlative Imaging Council (CIC) continues to develop educational activities concerning correlative imaging aspects of Nuclear Medicine with other imaging modalities, especially PET/CT and SPECT/CT. The CIC is leading efforts within SNMMI to educate physicians on how to perform and interpret CT, through continuing education at the Annual and Midwinter meetings. Nuclear medicine physicians receive 100 CT CME credits upon completion of 500 cases of CT reviews supervised by expert radiologists. Over the past few years, CIC has initiated SAM Credit in the two day course. With the advent of PET/MRI, CIC has also initiated a new MRI case review series along similar lines. Thus far CIC has organized fourteen (16) case based CT review courses. The attendance and dates of these courses are listed in Appendix 1. These courses have been enormously successful with good attendance. Most of these sessions are held during SNMMI Annual and Mid- Winter meetings with two meetings held as free standing sessions, as listed in the Appendix. Each Course covered 100 CT case reviews in the areas of Head/Neck, Chest, Abdomen/Pelvis and Musculoskeletal CT anatomy under the supervision of an expert Radiologist. Attendees earned CME hours as well as credits for 100 CT cases for each session. After completion of 500 cases the candidates can get a certificate for reading CT cases performed in conjunction with PET/CT and SPECT/CT as per SNMMI/ACR guidelines. Membership dues are currently $20 a year. As of July 1, 2014 the CIC has 133 members. This represents a decrease in membership, in keeping with general trend of SNMMI council membership. CIC members receive semi-annual newsletters summarizing the activities of the CIC and explaining the benefits of membership, and 500 CT review cases based on ACR and SNMMI agreement. 2) Mission of the Council The Correlative Imaging Council exists within the Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging with the aim to: (a) Provide a forum for members with similar interests 1

Membership benefits, retention of members, and recruitment of new members continues to be a topic of discussion at Board of Directors meetings and conference calls. Membership benefits include: A forum for discussion and dissemination of basic science and clinical practice information regarding correlative imaging. Eligibility to nominate young professionals to serve as interns on the CIC Board of Directors Semi annual newsletter CT case review courses to meet SNMMI/ACR recommended requirements. MRI case review courses to aid preparation for implementation of PET/MRI. 2

3 5) Accomplishments The CIC council has so far organized 16 CT for Nuclear Medicine Professionals during SNMMI annual and MWM. The attendance at these courses have been extremely good providing the attendees maximum credit of 100 CT case review per course under the supervision of an expert board certified Radiologist. Each of these courses also offered 16 CE credits towards the required 100 hours of Continued Education credits. Those physicians who had attended all 500 interactive CT reviews along with 100 CT CME hours, received a certificate stating that they have fulfilled education and training recommendations for both PET and CT performed with PET/CT and SPECT/CT. Additionally, CIC has provided several categorical and CME courses at the Mid Winter and Annual Meetings which benefited SNMMI membership. This year, the Walter Wolf Young Investigator Award, in honor of Professor Walter Wolf, past president of the council, was presented to Dr. Jean-Francois Montegianifor his abstract titled Personalized 177Lu-octreotate PPRT: Cycle-to-cycle renal radiation dose prediction using quantitative SPECT/CT dosimeter. The award and a check for $1,000 were presented at the CIC business meeting in St. Louis, MO. 6) Goals and Projects The CIC contributes to the SNMMI Strategic Plan Goal B, facilitate and support the availability and clinical utilization of nuclear medicine and molecular imaging technologies; Goal D, advance and promote quality, value and safety of molecular imaging and nuclear medicine; and Goal E, support and enhance the professional workforce and environment. 1. Organize a two-day CT case review workshop during the Midwinter meeting The CIC will continue to organize the CT review courses at SNMMI annual and mid-winter meetings to continue educating physicians on CT. These courses also help keep physicians updated by reinforcing CT education and facilitates maintenance of necessary CE necessary for CT interpretation. 2. Organize a new MRI Case review work shop similar to CT case review at SNMMI Annual Meetings. With the advent of PET/MRI, the CIC will organize MRI review sessions to provide MRI education to the membership. The framework for delivering this content will be based on the CT review series developed by the CIC. 3. Plan Categorical Course and CE for the Annual Meeting The CIC will focus on multimodality imaging in several settings. Certain topics that are of special interest to CIC include cardiac multimodality imaging (including cardiac CT and cardiac MRI), 3

4 multimodality imaging for theranostic approaches, multimodality imaging for interventions including biopsies and multimodality imaging in the era of molecular imaging. 4. Develop educational content and resources for CIC members-only webpage CIC will develop various online educational content including cases, review material and other relevant educational content that will be available for CIC members-only online via the CIC webpage. 5. Collaborate with the SNMMI-TS for providing education to the technologists The fusion technologist operating hybrid scanners also needs relevant educational resources to develop professionally. CIC will work with the SNMMI-TS to help in the development, organization and delivery of relevant educational content to the technologists as related to correlative and multimodality imaging. Education will focus on CT and MRI as well as other modalities like USG and interventions using the newer hybrid technologies (like real time PET/CT guided biopsies and targeted therapies based on radionuclide imaging). 6. Mentor intern planning and selection of topics for intern CIC will continue to aid in the professional development of young professionals by providing internship opportunities to them and mentoring them during their term. 7. Serve as bridge/liaison with other imaging modalities CIC will serve as a bridge to link nuclear medicine and molecular imaging to other branches of radiology. CIC will plan to nominate members to attend various meetings focused on other imaging modalities to bring their perspective to SNMMI and at the same time make them aware of the power of nuclear medicine and molecular imaging and assess possible synergies. This may need some budgeting. 8. CIC will continue to provide several CME, and categorical courses in correlative imaging with SAM credits to benefit the members. 7) Budget and Resource Requirements a. Summary of Financial Needs The attached budget summarizes the total resources needed to accomplish all the goals set forth in the business plan. b. Resource Requirements No additional staff, materials, technology, or marketing support is required beyond the usual support provided by SNMMI headquarters. 4
