4 Dear Public Service Director, Download the PDF version Falls can happen anytime and anywhere to people of any age. However, as people get older, the number of falls and the severity of injury resulting from falls increase. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), one in four adults age 65 and older falls. Falls are also the leading cause of fatal and non fatal injuries in people over 65. Common injuries due to falls are head injuries, shoulder and forearm fractures, spine fractures, pelvic fractures and hip fractures. Many things can put one at higher risk for a fall such as certain medical conditions or poor dietary habits. Other risk factors include lack of exercise and excessive alcohol intake and smoking which can decrease bone strength. Falls can also occur in the home as a result of hazards like slippery or wet surfaces, poor lighting, inadequate footwear and cluttered pathways. Most fractures as a result from a fall in the home are due to everyday activities such as walking on stairs, going to the bathroom or working in the kitchen. While a fall can be a major life-changing event that robs the elderly of their independence, this can be prevented with important lifestyle choices and by making safety modifications in the home. In order to help educate your listeners about the risks of falls, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) and the Orthopaedic Trauma Association have teamed up to develop a new radio public service announcement titled "Preventing Falls Among the Elderly" (:60, :30). This PSA demonstrates how devastating falls can be to elderly people and gives tips on how they can be prevented. It also encourages listeners to visit orthoinfo.org/falls for more information. We hope you will air this PSA, which is good for use through February 20, 2020, for as long and as often as possible. For any questions or requests regarding the PSA, please contact our distribution representative, Shaliza Thomas, at Connect360 Multimedia ( sthomas@c360m.com; ph: ). Thank you for your support of these important messages. Sincerely, Melissa H. Leeb Director, Communications American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons 3
