2 Dementia: a challenge for EU-Member States All Member States are concerned: 6.37 million people were living with dementia in the EU in 2011 Prevalence rate: 7.23% in 65 years or higher age population (JA ALCOVE-report, 2013) Economic cost of 105 billion in 2011 (J. 17 First WHO Ministerial Conference on Global Action Against Dementia (GAAD) Geneva, March 2015 Organised by the WHO in close collaboration with the UK, involving 80 countries Objective: raise awareness about the global burden and impact of dementia to encourage Governments worldwide to take action to prevent dementia and improve care services to identify cares or disease-modifying therapies for dementia The conference endorsed a Call for Action to invite a sustained global effort to promote GAAD, with the WHO in a leadership role. Discussions about the architecture of further continuity activities are ongoing.

18 Dementia will be a priority of the Luxembourg and Dutch EU-Presidencies Luxembourg will put the focus on prevention and care, and intends to raise dementia in the Informal Health Council under its Presidency. The Netherlands will organise a European conference on dementia on 8-9 May 2016

19 Conclusion Building on the activities and achievements since 2009, the Commission has launched action to: Maintain its coordinating role in the development of EU-policy on dementia and in supporting Member States Launch the second Joint Action; Provide further opportunities to support research under the "Horizon 2020"-EU Research Framework Programme; Stimulate the development and use of e-health solutions in the field of dementia; Continue playing a global role and collaborating with international stakeholders, in particularly in the context of the initiative "Global Action Against Dementia.
