2 The 2017 Current Challenges in Rehabilitation Medicine conference will focus on best practices for controlled substance prescribing on day one and innovative treatment strategies for spinal cord injury (SCI) patients on day two. By bringing together leaders in the field of rehabilitation medicine, we hope to continue to close the provider knowledge gap, and improve the quality of life for our patients. Topics of discussion will include opioids, patient advocacy, integrated care, neurogenic bladder, mobility and sexual health issues relating to the care of traumatic brain and SCI patients. Target Audience Physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners and nurses; residents, fellows and medical students; occupational and physical therapists and therapy students working with rehabilitative medicine patients across the continuum of care Learning Objectives At the conclusion of this knowledge and competency-based activity, the participant should be able to: Describe appropriate assessment techniques for identifying opioid abuse/misuse and addiction. Discuss best practices for managing pain. Review regulations governing opioid prescribing. Recognize recent issues and challenges pertaining to patient coverage for procedures and patient care. Review proper documentation to facilitate efficient pre-authorization for procedures patients require. Describe supplemental medical decision-making information to patients suffering from TBI. Discuss effective strategies for providing improved care coordinated for patients who have sustained TBI. Share strategies for effective patient communication related to symptoms and complications of neurogenic bladder. Explain how various factors influence the treatment path for neurogenic bladder. Review new advancements in care for spinal cord injury patients suffering from neurogenic bladder. Describe the components of a brain-computer interface that allow brain activity to be translated into movement commands. Recognize the patients perspective in facing challenges following a spinal cord injury. Discuss sexual health issues in a patient with SCI. Substitutes are encouraged. Course Credit The Wake Area Health Education Center designates this live activity for a maximum of AMA PRA Category 1 Credits. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. Wake AHEC is accredited by the North Carolina Medical Society to provide continuing medical education for physicians. Wake AHEC will provide up to 1.1 CEU to participants who attend both days.
