4 Introduction to the appendices This is the appendices for your local report. local report is in a separate document. The appendices present data from Round 3 of the National Audit of Dementia, both at a national level and for your. Data for your in Round 2 is also shown where applicable. When comparing Round 2 data with Round 3 data, please be aware that differences in sample sizes and slight wording changes to some questions, can affect results in both rounds. Therefore, conclusions made from comparing the data should be with caution. Hospitals with less than five returns for the carer or staff questionnaires have not received any data and returns of 5 to 9 questionnaires have not received demographic information. The table below shows how the data tables in the appendices are laid out and what information you can find in each cell. Std no. Question number and text National audit Standard reference and type. Standards document can be found on the audit website. Question number. Orange items in the casenote audit appendix show low interrater reliability. Question wording as in tool. The national audit refers to all s from England and Wales that participated in the Round 3 audit. Data for your from Round 3. If the same question or a similar question was asked in Round 2, we have provided your Round 2 response for comparison. The carer and staff questionnaires are new tools and therefore this column has been excluded in these appendices. We have provided the percentage yes response (unless otherwise indicated) and the numerator/denominator. The denominator will change throughout the appendices, depending on whether questions were routed (not asked in some instances), N/A responses were chosen (these have been excluded from the analyses), or where staff and carers did not respond. For the organisational checklist, data from 199 s are included in the national audit column (all the registered participants). 195 s participated in the casenote audit, returning casenotes and this is shown in the national audit column. The national audit column for the casenote audit also shows the median and the inter quartile range for each question (where applicable). Question items which were found to have lower agreement in the interrater reliability analysis (see audit website) have been coloured orange. 196 s returned carer questionnaires. Data from all questionnaires (4664) is presented in the carer questionnaire data tables in Appendix E. 198 s returned staff questionnaires. Data from all questionnaires (14416) is presented in Appendix G. For some questionnaire items, the data for the two most positive answers have been combined, as well as being presented separately. This is provided both at a national level and for your. National Audit of Dementia Round 3 Leeds General Infirmary 2

42 Appendix H: Staff suggestions for your The staff questionnaire included a question asking staff to make one suggestion on how their could improve care and support provided to people with dementia. Below, all suggestions from staff at Leeds General Infirmary are provided. Registered Nurses (Band 5 or 6) Allowing relatives to help out more with carers e.g. feeding, taking meds. Due to dementia patients being higher risk of harm, staff to patient ratio should be reconsidered. An increase of staff will help protect the dementia patients and care for them effectively, instead of being delayed due to patient and ward demands. Due to staffing issues at times, staff do not have enough time to sit and talk to dementia patients. Asking for volunteers might be a good option for the to consider focusing on wards with dementia patients. Fast track pathway for dementia patients attending the emergency department. Good staffing level. Have dementia specialists visit to show how we can improve services. Have more distraction techniques available i.e. games or more radios which can be used to help keep patients comfortable. Plus, increase in staff levels to increase the one to one time for these patients. I feel we should allow and encourage family members/ carers of people with dementia to visit at any time, including overnight stays if appropriate. I have seen so many people with dementia come into and become so agitated and distressed because they are in a new environment surrounded be strange people, which can affect their outcome. Family members/ carers can help them feel safe and can aid in their care. Increase staff ratio to accommodate demand/ activity involved with dementia staff. Train kitchen staff to help feed. Dementia patients mixed with fully compos mentis patients can be very distressing. Need more staff to physically take time needed to feed someone and not feel rushed. Need more help from unqualified staff in supporting nutritional needs of those with dementia. More specialised staff to attend to their special unique needs. More staff so we are able to give a better quality of care. More staff to allow for more time spent with each patient. More support during mealtimes to assist with feeding and dementia patients nutritional needs. Most of the shift I don't get time to sit and take time to talk to them due to busy events of the ward. The trust could improve the care/ support for patients with dementia by making it easier to access additional staff or resources like music/ reading material appropriate for patients with dementia. Registered Nurses (Band 7 or above) I think it is very important that all staff who care for dementia patients should have the adequate training so that it is understood how their care differs this includes teachings for medical staff as well. More support in enabling patients with dementia to behave in their normal manner i.e. walking up and down, ensuring we have the staff to facilitate this. More training. Staff support but this is an issue that covers a wide range of problems like the idea of finger food, that is something I am not aware of and definitely worth trialling. National Audit of Dementia Round 3 Leeds General Infirmary 40
43 Registered Nurses (Band 7 or above) To have more opportunity for relatives to find help and assistance with their patient at home. Healthcare Assistants Better staffing levels, as unable to spend much time with dementia patients as very busy, more 1:1 would be better. I think once a week someone should do activities with the dementia wards. By encouraging relatives to bring photos and memorable things in to help the patient relax and also as a talking point. Having an extra member of staff so the right care can be given without the stress of people being too busy to have time to dedicate to people with dementia. More equipment to stimulate the patients they often sit with no form of stimulation for very long periods. More staff to have the time to sit and talk to the patients. More staff, so can spend more time looking after everyone s individual needs. More staff. More staffing to allow us to take more time with individuals who need it. More training on ways to deal with dementia. Provide more out of hours support to staff and patients and provide more services within the for dementia patients. Provision of more staff and training will be very beneficial. Sometimes can be short staffed therefore, do not always have as much time as necessary when caring for patients with dementia. The discharge process for dementia patients takes a long time, usually two months. There needs to be more places suitable to take medically fit patients who end up being stuck on the ward for a month extra at least because there aren't any suitable rehabilitation beds available for patients with mobility problems. Training. Doctors Improved liaison with care of the elderly services and planned (job planned) care of elderly input. Due to split site working, this has been a challenge and needs addressing to improve the care of elderly patients on surgical wards with complex needs, and decision making, including those with dementia. It is never made clear whether a patient is confirmed dementia or not. Perhaps develop a form or entry on patient pathway management system to make it clear at the clerking process. Allied Healthcare Professionals Allocated meal assistant/ companion to provide encouragement, support and prompts at mealtimes. When it is essential that a patient with dementia be isolated in a side room, effort should be made to personalise this space to try and avoid unnecessary distress to the patient. Training on how to do this would be most welcome, by myself. National Audit of Dementia Round 3 Leeds General Infirmary 41
