5 Pediatric Bone Densitometry Course There are caveats that arise in the interpretation of BMD results from growing and developing children. Lectures will review children in a pediatric practice who may be at risk for a low BMD; a definition of osteoporosis in pediatric patients; diagnosis and management of osteoporosis in the child or adolescent with chronic disease; appropriate reporting of pediatric bone density results; and a review of peripheral quantitative tomography (pqct) and other modalities to evaluate the peripheral skeleton. The ISCD Pediatrics BDC is an advanced densitometry course that provides an overview obtaining and interpreting bone mineral density (BMD) measurements in children and adolescents. The half-day course is open to clinicians, technologists, scientists, researchers, and healthcare providers who wish to learn more about pediatric densitometry. Identify children who are at risk for developing early bone loss and osteoporosis in accordance with the guidelines from the 2007 Pediatric Position Development Conference Identify issues that arise in the assessment of skeletal health in children with chronic disease in order to develop an effective management strategy Apply the recommendations from the 2007 Pediatric Position Development Conference for reporting bone densitometry results in your pediatric patients Evaluate the use of measurement tools for acquiring bone density assessments other than DXA (e.g., pqct, ultrasound) to provide optimal assessment of the skeletal health of your pediatric patient Schedule: Lecture 1: Definition of Osteoporosis in Children and Adolescents Lecture 2: Bone Mass Assessment in Children with Chronic Disease Lecture 3: Use of pqct and Other DXA Skeletal Assessment Tools in Children s Hospital Boston Lecture 4: Reporting Pediatric Densitometry Results Lecture 5: Summary and Case Presentations Credit Designation: for Clinical Densitometry designates this live educational activity for a maximum of 4.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s). 6 Vertebral Fracture Recognition Course This is an advanced densitometry course that focuses on vertebral fracture imaging, which offers a significant advance in the diagnosis and management of patients at risk for osteoporotic fractures by allowing clinicians to identify and treat those who would not be recognized using a bone density test alone. This course discusses the importance of vertebral fractures in the clinical management of osteoporosis. It describes the appearance of a normal spine, vertebral fractures and other findings that may be confused with fractures. Detailed instruction is given regarding fracture recognition and methods used for their definition and classification. Patient positioning, image acquisition and analysis, which are helpful in optimizing the visualization of vertebral fractures, are also described. The course includes case-based interactions which help the attendees learn to recognize, classify and report vertebral fractures. The half-day course is open to clinicians, technologists, scientists, researchers, and healthcare providers who wish to learn more about the importance of vertebral fractures and their recognition on VFA and spine images in general. Assess the quality of an imaging examination and understand when to use complementary technologies Utilize vertebral imaging as indicated in the 2013 Official Positions of the ISCD to optimize clinical management decisions for patients with osteoporosis Recognize, define and report vertebral fractures detected on spine imaging and incorporate this information in diagnosing and treating osteoporosis Compare and contrast the appearance of normal and fractured vertebrae as well as non-fracture abnormalities on spine imaging Schedule:: Lecture 1: Importance of Vertebral Fractures Lecture 2: Technical Aspects Lecture 3: Vertebral Fracture Recognition and Interpretations Lecture 4: Indications for Spine Imaging and Principles of Reporting VFA Lecture 5: Case Study Review and Workshop Credit Designation: for Clinical Densitometry designates this live educational activity for a maximum of 4.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s). Case studies will be presented in the final lecture. The half-day course is directed toward clinicians, technologists, researchers, scientists, and healthcare providers who wish to learn the skills and techniques of quality DXA body composition analysis to implement in their practice. Utilize DXA technology for body composition analysis of fat, lean muscle and bone mass Recognize other methods of body composition analysis used in the clinical setting Incorporate scan acquisition and analysis for their adult and pediatric patients Differentiate reference values and indices and identify their limitations Make use of clinical applications for DXA Body Composition Schedule:: Lecture 1: DXA Technology for Total and Regional Body Composition Measures Lecture 2: Other Methods for Body Composition Testing Lecture 3: Adult DXA Body Composition Scan Acquisition and Analysis Lecture 4: Body Composition Reporting and Reference Data Lecture 5: Current and Potential Uses of DXA Body Composition in Clinical Practice and Research Credit Designation: for Clinical Densitometry designates this live educational activity for a maximum of 4.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s).
