4 Risk of Interactions Older adults are 2 to 7 times more likely to experience an adverse drug reaction (ADR) than younger adults Older adults take more medications at the same time and for longer periods of time. Often are treating more than one condition (arthritis, high blood pressure, glaucoma) 7 What changes with age? Absorption Distribution Metabolism Excretion/Elimination All these are usually slower in the older adult. 8 4
5 Risk of Interactions Medication interactions with increasing number of medications Two medications = 6% risk Eight medications = 100% risk Dropping one medication from an eight medication regimen decreases risk by 66% Reference: Golden AG, Preston RA, Barnett SD et al. Inappropriate medication prescribing in homebound older adults. J Am Geriat Soc 1999;47: Risk of Interactions About 1/3 of hospital admissions of older adults are associated with prescription medication use All medications have the potential for adverse reactions Consumers may not follow directions on non-prescriptions or over-the-counter (OTC) products and herbal products 10 5
6 Side effects of medicines Changes in mood, energy, attitude and memory can be signs that t a drug is not working properly. Some medicines can cause depression, sleepiness and loss of coordination. which may lead to an increased risk of falls, car accidents and hospitalization. Loss of ability to function independently. 11 Medication Management Know your medical history and don t keep anything secret. Report any adverse effects For example some drugs can affect vision 12 6
