4 Risk of Interactions Older adults are 2 to 7 times more likely to experience an adverse drug reaction (ADR) than younger adults Older adults take more medications at the same time and for longer periods of time. Often are treating more than one condition (arthritis, high blood pressure, glaucoma) 7 What changes with age? Absorption Distribution Metabolism Excretion/Elimination All these are usually slower in the older adult. 8 4

6 Side effects of medicines Changes in mood, energy, attitude and memory can be signs that t a drug is not working properly. Some medicines can cause depression, sleepiness and loss of coordination. which may lead to an increased risk of falls, car accidents and hospitalization.
