7 Menstruation is when the egg is released from the ovaries to the fallopian tube. is the shedding of the lining of the uterus in the form of menstrual blood. The egg is released from ovary and traveling in fallopian tube. The uterine lining is getting thicker. This is called OVULATION. The egg moved from the fallopian tube and into the uterus. The uterine lining is getting even thicker, waiting for a fertilized egg to make a home there. The egg is getting ripe in the ovary. The uterine lining is thin. The egg is not fertilized, so it did not need to make a home inside of the uterus. The egg dissolves, just like sugar in hot tea. The lining of the uterus leaves the body by coming out through the cervix and vagina. This is called MENSTRUATION. 7

8 Myth or Fact? Menstruating women are unclean. : Menstrual blood is healthy and clean. It is not dangerous but natural. Women can get pregnant while they are menstruating. : Yes, a woman can get pregnant while she is menstruating. The only way to prevent pregnancy is by using a condom, family planning or not having sex. Beginning to menstruate does not mean a girl is ready to have sex. : Beginning to menstruate does not mean a girl is ready to have sex. That is a personal choice! Many girls begin to menstruate at 10 or 11 years old and are too young to begin having sex. Menstruating women should not cook. : Menstruating women can cook. They will not contaminate food by simply touching it. They are not menstruating from their hand! If the menstrual blood is brown or black then that woman has an infection. : Sometimes very heavy menstrual can look brown or black. It is normal and not an infection. If the woman has very large blood clots she should go to the health clinic. If the woman is in pain while she is receiving, she has an infection. :Women can feel pain because their cervix is opening and the uterus is contracting to push the menstrual blood out. Pain does not mean the woman has an infection. A girl should not go to school while she is menstruating/receiving. :All girls should go to school while they are receiving. We have to make sure we are not shaming girls when they are menstruating and make sure the school has proper toilets. KEY MESSAGE Menstruation is natural and normal for all women. It is not a dirty thing. It is important that everyone understand menstruation. 8

9 Sex & Sexual Desire Sexual Activity is any voluntary sexual behavior that we do Sexual Intercourse is any form of genital touching. Sexual Desire is a longing (to want) for sexual intimacy or expression or feeling of sexual attraction. True or False? Most women do not really desire sex. : Most women do desire sex. Sex is a natural thing. However, if a woman does not get pleasure from sex, she may lose interest. If you desire sex, you have to have it. : Sexual desire does not have to lead to sexual activity. In fact, people can enjoy feeling turned on on without having sex. If you are a male, then you want to have sex all the time. : Men do not always desire sex. Like all people, all men have different levels of desire and should always practice safe sex by using condoms. If a boy gets an erection, it means he wants to have sex if a girl s vagina lubricates (gets wet), it means she wants to have sex. desire. : Erections and lubrication can occur for no reason or reasons not related to A person can feel sexual desire for someone he or she does not love. : People often confuse sexual desire and love. You may love someone and not desire to have sex with them and you can desire to have sex with someone whom you do not love. Sex is a responsibility and you should always protect yourself by using condoms and family planning. KEY MESSAGE Feeling sexual desire is natural, normal and different for each person. Then they break down and are recycled into the body. When a man has an erection (standing penis) he must always ejaculate. : Many times men have erections (standing penis) without ejaculating. If the man waits for small time the erection will go without ejaculating. You can get pregnant even if it is your first time having sex. : You can get pregnant any time you have sex without protection from family planning or condoms. Country medicine can bring back a girl s virginity. : A girls virginity cannot come back after she has had sex. Anybody can always decide to start practicing abstinence. A girl can prevent pregnancy by washing her vagina with Coke or Sprite after sex. : Washing the vagina with Coke or Sprite cannot prevent pregnancy. Only family planning or condoms. If the man pulls out before ejaculating, I should not be worried about pregnancy. : Sperm are very tiny and some semen (man water) can come out of the penis before ejaculation. Using family planning or condoms is the only way to prevent pregnancy. It is shameful to enjoy sex. : It is normal to enjoy sex. Always remember to protect yourself. KEY MESSAGE It is never too late for me to be more responsible about having sex through better communication with my partner, starting family planning and getting tested for STIs. 11
