Office of Naval Research Grant, San Diego State University Research Assistant III Marine Mammal Acoustic ID Project

2 Gregory S. Campbell -2- The objective of this project was to develop a computer-based acoustical call identification system to conduct surveys of individual female Steller sea lions. Developed a near-real time data collection and analysis protocol on board a field portable, solar-powered laptop computer. Conducted Steller sea lion acoustical field research in Southeast Alaska. Analyzed and interpreted acoustical and statistical data. Prepared and wrote publications, reports and grant proposals. Presented project results to professional and general-public audiences. Cetacean Behavior Laboratory, San Diego State University Graduate Assistant The goals of this project were to develop novel approaches for the study of marine mammal populations and to prepare post-baccalaureate interns for future research opportunities. Collected, analyzed and interpreted acoustical and mark-recapture data for studies on free-ranging cetaceans in the Southern California Bight. Prepared and wrote publications, reports and grant proposals. Led graduate seminars, research development discussions, and acoustical data collection/analysis training sessions for post-baccalaureate interns. Worked in cooperation with private, university and federal agencies in developing, funding and conducting research projects. Cornell Bioacoustics Research Program 1998 Kauai, Hawaii Research Assistant ATOC Marine Mammal Assessment The goal of this research was to determine what influences the Acoustic Thermometry of Ocean Climate (ATOC) project had on the distribution, abundance and behavior of humpback whales. Collected and analyzed acoustic, theodolite and behavioral data. Assembled a digital acoustical data acquisition system, hydrophone array and pop-up data recording instruments. Oceanic Society Belize, Central America Principal Researcher Marine Mammal Research Project The goals of this project were to provide data on marine mammal abundance and distribution in a sensitive coral reef ecosystem. Collected, analyzed and interpreted acoustical and mark-recapture data on bottlenose dolphins. Presented project results at scientific conferences and public meetings. Prepared and wrote publications, reports and magazine articles. Managed, trained and taught volunteer research assistants.

3 Gregory S. Campbell -3- San Diego State University Undergraduate Research Assistant The goal of this research was to conduct long-term population monitoring of bottlenose dolphins inhabiting waters off the Southern California coast. Assisted faculty and graduate students with the collection and analysis of ecological, behavioral and mark-recapture data. Learned and applied computer programs to field and laboratory research tasks. Trained interns and new graduate students in data collection and analysis methods. Conducted and presented an independent undergraduate research project. JOURNAL PUBLICATIONS: Soldevilla, M. S., Henderson, E. E.., Campbell G. S., Roch, M. A., Wiggins, S. M., and J. A.
