2 Overview In this course, you will: Find out what behavior constitutes sexual harassment. Understand the effects of sexual harassment on individuals and organizations. Better understand how your actions and words may be perceived by others. Review different types of sexual harassment and case examples. Analyze situations to determine if they are sexual harassment. Identify steps to prevent sexual harassment. Learn about how to respond to sexual harassment. 3 Lesson 2 The Legal Definition of Sexual Harassment Courts categorize sexual harassment into two types: 1. Quid pro quo 2. Hostile work environment Quid Pro Quo What is an example of quid pro quo harassment? Hostile Work Environment What do you think is an example of a hostile environment? Write examples for each way a hostile work environment is created: 1. Visual harassment 2. Verbal harassment 3. Physical harassment 3
4 Sexual Harassment Claims Fill in the blanks to complete the sentences. in the office who experiences the hostile work environment can claim sexual harassment. This means that even though someone may not be the actual of sexual harassment, he or she can still claim sexual harassment based on offensive that occurs around him or her. Lesson 3 Varying Perspectives on Sexual Harassment Courts have established the test to determine sexual harassment cases; that is, courts consider how a reasonable person would perceive the incident. Varying perspectives: When sexual conduct in the workplace involves peers, such as two coworkers telling explicit jokes, men and women may perceive the effects on the work environment differently. Sexual attention, conversation, or remarks can be just as offensive, embarrassing, or threatening to men as they are to women. Take a few minutes to make note of some things you have been offended by that others have not. 4

Choose from the following words to fill in the blanks: respect, policies, violations, boundaries 1. Know and understand your company policies. 2. Follow the at all times. 3. 7 Lesson 7 How to Respond to Sexual Harassment Three steps to follow if you are being sexually harassed: The three steps below are not in the order explained in the course. Write a number in front of each step to place it in the correct order. Report the harassment using your employer s reporting procedures. Document the conversation, offending behavior, or incidents in detail. Firmly and directly tell the person to stop. 3 steps to take if someone is harassing one of your coworkers: 1. Discourage the behavior. 2. Report the harassment to your employer. 3.
