The focus of this program is on understanding the significance of human sexuality as it plays out in treatment situations from childhood throughout the life span.

Although many mental health experts have since written extensively in the sexual field, specific behavioral and cognitive approaches have received emphasis in the literature.

Clinicians who treat victims of sexual abuse will gain expertise in specific techniques.

2 The focus of this program is on understanding the significance of human sexuality as it plays out in treatment situations from childhood throughout the life span. Educational Objectives Professional training in sex therapy was established in 1970 with the publication of Masters and Johnson s book Treating Sexual Inadequacy. Although many mental health experts have since written extensively in the sexual field, specific behavioral and cognitive approaches have received emphasis in the literature. Sex therapy is a specialized psychotherapeutic modality often utilizing short-term approaches. The sex therapist deals openly and directly with sensitive and painful issues. Clinicians who treat victims of sexual abuse will gain expertise in specific techniques. Upon completion of the Sex Therapy Postgraduate Training Institute of New York course work, participants will be able to: 1. Recognize the major bio-psychosocial forces that shape sexual functioning. 2. Use the criteria for assessment and diagnosis of psychosexual disorders as described in the current edition of the DSM IV-R. 3. Evaluate the dynamics of interpersonal relationships, including the socio-cultural factors influencing sexual values and behavior, and specify ways to encourage loving relationships between partners and within families. 4. Identify a variety of sexual orientation and gender-related issues, and the importance of ensuring basic ethics, sexual rights. 5. Differentiate between physical and psychological causes of sex dysfunctions. 6. Assess the impact of disease, medication & drugs on sexual functioning and relationships, including medical factors that influence sexuality including illness, disability, drugs, pregnancy and pregnancy termination, contraception and fertility, sexually transmitted diseases. 7. Critique the current research in clinical sex therapy. 8. Discuss sexual health issues, including safer sex practices and the effects of substance abuse on sexuality. 9. Desctibe the psycho-sexual treatment methods for victims of domestic violence and sexual abuse. 10. Explain the immediate & deeper issues underlying sexual dysfunction. 11. Explain atypical sexual behaviors, including paraphilias and compulsive/impulsive sexual behavior. 12. Utilize theory and methods of sexuality counseling and psychotherapy, including several different models. 13. Apply theories and methods of approach to a variety of interventions in relationship systems experiencing sex and intimacy problems. 14. Distinguish theories and method of approach to medical intervention in the evaluation and treatment of psychosexual disorders. 15. Employ the principles of consultation, collaboration, and referral in a sex therapy practice. 16. Discuss techniques for evaluating clinical outcomes. 17. Compile, review anfd evaluate a list of videos, journal articles and books to formulate treatment plans. 18. Analyze, interpret and discuss sex therapy cases.

4 Presenters and Guest Faculty DR. SUSAN LEE, Ed.D., LCSW Director, President, & Clinical Case Supervisor at the Florida Postgraduate Sex Therapy Training Institute. Dr. Lee is an accomplished licensed psychotherapist, couples counselor and Certified Sex Therapist in private practice in Palm Beach, Florida. Dr. Lee has conducted sexual medicine research for the FDA and has been involved in extensive evaluative roles in the sexual health research field. Dr. Lee completed a two-year Fellowship in Human Sexuality at Cornell Medical College, New York, under the directorship of Helen Singer Kaplan, M.D., Ph.D., and a one-year Fellowship in Sexual Dysfunction at Long Island Jewish- Hillside Medical Center, New York. Dr. Lee is the author of, The Practice of Sex Therapy: A Curriculum for Postgraduate Education, soon to be published. She received a Doctorate in Sexology Education from the Institute for the Advanced Study of Human Sexuality, San Francisco. She is a member of the International Society for Women s Sexual Health (ISSWSH), Society Sex Therapy Research (SSTAR), The National Association of Social Workers (NASW), The Palm Beach County Medical Society, and is an AASECT Certified Diplomate Sex Therapist, AASECT Sex Therapist Supervisor, and a Provider of AASECT CE credits. Susan Lee conducted the first sex therapy certification trainings in Hong Kong, China, in 2004, 2006 and 2008, and is on the Board of the Hong Kong Association of Sexuality Educators, Researchers and Therapists (HKASERT). RICHARD M. SIEGEL, MS, LMHC, CST, Co-Director. Mr. Siegel is a FL-licensed mental health counselor, certified sex therapist, and is certified by AASECT as a sex therapist, as well as a sex therapy supervisor. He has a rich experiential background, including over 20 years of sexuality education and a private sex therapy practice. Ricky is currently completing a Doctoral program at the American Academy of Clinical Sexologists, with a research focus on compulsive and impulsive sexual behavior problems. He served on the Board of Directors of AASECT for two elected terms, after three years as the annual conference program co-chair. He has worked enthusiastically to integrate traditional sex therapy into the emergent specialty of sexual medicine. Dr. Lee will be joined by presenters who are locally and nationally renowned experts in the area of human sexuality, gynecology, urology, psychiatry, sex research and law enforcement, to bring the most current information on human sexuality research and treatment of sexual dysfunction to this series of programs. MARILYN VOLKER, Ed.D., is a consultant and clinical sexologist. She is a sexuality educator for the past thirty years, a diplomate of the American Board of Sexology, and an Associate Fellow of the American Academy of Clinical Sexologists. Dr. Volker is on the faculty of the University of Miami, FIU Medical School, Barry, St. Thomas and Lynn Universities. She teaches medical, nursing and counseling students about sexuality and HIV/AIDS issues. Dr. Volker teaches classes about sexuality in recovery for the University of Miami s Center for Addiction Studies and Education (CASE), the Addiction Training Institute (ATI), and the Florida Alcohol and Drug Association (FADA), and a variety of addiction treatment facilities. MATTHEW YAU, BAppSc, MCom, MSc(Hons), PhD, OTR, CST, is currently Professor and Head, Discipline of Occupational Therapy, School of Public Health, Tropical Medicine & Rehabilitation Sciences, James Cook University, Australia. Dr. Yau has extensive clinical experience in mental health practice and is an advocate for people with disabilities. He is an AASECT Certified Sex Therapist and Supervisor. His academic and research interests include culture and mental illness, and sexuality and disability. Dr. Yau is also the Founding Chair of the Hong Kong Association Sexuality Educators, Researchers & Therapists (HKASERT). 4

This course is approved for 120 CE Credits and 20 hours of Clinical Case Supervision by the Board of Clinical Social Work, Marriage & Family Therapy, and Mental Health Counseling, Division of Medical Quality Assurance, Department of Health, State of Florida. WHY ATTEND THIS INSTITUTE? IT S THE LAW! Florida Law states that LCSW/LMFT/LMHC to use the title sex therapist must meet specific Educational Requirements as described in FS 491.64B4-7.004.

Whereas the provision of clinical, counseling, and psychotherapy services may include sex therapy, it is the intent of the Board to assure that those clinical social workers, marriage and family

FL Regulation use of the Title Sex Therapist Section B (November 2007) use of the Title Sex Therapist. (1) Intent. Whereas the provision of clinical, counseling, and psychotherapy services may include sex therapy, it is the intent of the Board to assure that those clinical social workers, marriage and family therapists, and mental health counselors who hold themselves out to the public as sex therapists have completed a minimum level of training in the specific area of sex therapy and the general provision of clinical, counseling and psychotherapy services. (2) Use of the Title Sex Therapist. Any licensed clinical social worker, marriage and family therapist, or mental health counselor who holds himself out as a sex therapist shall have completed: (a) A minimum of 120 hours of approved education which meets the continuing education requirements of Rule Chapter , F.A.C., from twelve (12) of the following areas with a minimum of 10 hours in each area taken: 1. Sexual and reproductive anatomy and physiology, 2. Developmental sexuality, 3. Gender-identity issues, 4. Socio-cultural factors in sexual values and behavior, 5. Medical factors related to sexuality and sexual functioning, 6. Interaction between sexuality and dynamics of interpersonal and family relationships, 7. Sexual offender treatment, 8. Diagnosis of sexual dysfunctions, disorders, and deviancy, 9. Treatment or sexual dysfunctions, disorders, and deviancy, 10. Legal, ethical, and forensic issues in sex therapy, 11. Sexually transmitted diseases, 12. Risk assessment with sex offenders, 13. Psychopharmacological therapy with sexual dysfunctions, disorders and deviancy, 14. Research on sexual dysfunctions, disorders and deviancy, 15. Sexual abuse treatment, 16. Victimology/victim therapy, 17. Group therapy in treatment of sexual dysfunctions, disorders and deviancy; and (b) As of January 1, 1997, in addition to the minimum hours in paragraph (2)(a) of this rule, the following shall apply: 1. A minimum of 40 client contact hours in the clinical practice of sex therapy during a minimum period of time of six months; 2. A minimum of 20 hours of supervision, where each supervisory session is no more than one and one-half hours in length, by a qualified supervisor as set forth in Rule , F.A.C., during a minimum period of time of six months. 3. For the purpose of this section, supervision is face-to-face contact between an intern or trainee and a supervisor during which the applicant apprises the supervisor of the diagnosis and treatment of each sex therapy client, client cases are discussed, the supervisor provides the applicant with oversight and guidance in diagnosing, treating and dealing with sex therapy clients, and the supervisor evaluates the applicant s performance. Supervision must: a. Focus on the raw data from the clinical sex therapy work, which is made directly available to the supervisor through such means as written clinical materials, direct observation and video and audio recordings: b. Be a process which is distinguishable from personal psychotherapy, consulting or didactic instruction; and c. During the supervisory period, 50% of the required supervision may be group supervision. If group supervision is obtained, it must be combined with individual supervision. For the purpose of this section, individual supervision is defined as one supervisor supervising no more than two (2) supervisees and group supervision is defined as one supervisor supervising more than (2) but a maximum of six (6) supervisees in the group. (3) Any licensed clinical social worker, marriage and family therapist or mental health counselor who was previously qualified to hold himself out as a sex therapist based on the education requirements existing between February 25, 1990 and December 31, 1996 may continue to use the title of sex therapist. Each course is 10 CE hours. Tuition for the entire program, which consists of 120 course hours, and 20 hours of individual and group supervision, is $ per semester.
