1 ADOLESCENT SEXUALITY - SHS Anonymous Survey Results Heather Johnson QUICK FACTS: The #1 most spread STD in the USA is Genital Warts (HPV). The most aggressive strands can cause cervical, penile, anal and oral cancers. These aggressive strands tend to never show symptoms. HPV is spread through skin-to-skin contact. Condoms are effective in protecting people from STD s that are spread through seminal, vaginal and blood fluids. However, condoms are not effective in protecting people from STD s that are spread skin-to-skin (HPV, Herpes and Syphilis). In the USA, 20 million new cases of an STD occur each year. Half of those cases are young people (ages 15-24). 1 in 4 Americans presently has an STD and nearly 80% of people that are infected do not know it. Abstinence (no genital contact) is the only 100% effective protection.
