Every stress leaves a scar, and the organism pays for its survival after a stressful situation by becoming a little older. ~ Hans Salye
The Stress Response
what is Stress? Stress refers to anything that disturbs an individual s physical, emotional, or mental balance. The body has numerous stress response mechanisms and stress can affect the body in many different ways. Stress can affect each individual differently. Stress can cause a headache for one person and digestive troubles for another. We must realize that not all stress is bad, it is a normal part of life. What really matters is how much stress, what kind of stress, and ultimately, how each individual handles stress.
the 3 types of stress Mental/Emotional Chemical Physical
Every system in your body defines stress differently: chronic pain creates stress to the nervous system. chronic inflammation creates stress for the cardiovascular system and so forth. Therefore stress can also be defined as anything that creates a disruption in the body

Stress and Disease Stress can affect any part of the body and produce physical and emotional symptoms. Studies report that 70-85% of all diseases have stress related factors. The following slides are a few examples
Ulcerative Colitis Long term stress increases the risk of ulcerative colitis flare ups Studies have found that long term stress as opposed to short term stress tripled the risk of flare ups.
Stress and Heart Disease Evidence from studies indicate that cardiovascular response to stress is a risk factor to the same magnitude as smoking, hypertension, insulin resistance and elevated cholesterol. Frequent and prolonged periods of elevated blood pressure during mental stress may promote mechanical injury to the lining or cause release of hormones that can promote the buildup of plaque. Circulation Vol. 96, No 11: pp
Stress and Diabetes One of undesirable effects of chronic stress is that it contributes to insulin resistance. (Cortisol) This can lead to diabetes. Journal of Clinical Endocrinology 54 (1982) pp
