Results from the Finnish wind turbine questionnaire study Research Group: Timo Lanki, Anu Turunen, Pekka Taimisto, Pekka Tiittanen, Tarja Yli-Tuomi FinWindResearch 1st Annual Seminar
Background Funding from the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health Research and expert work on environmental noise Main research interests are the effects of noise on health and wellbeing Including risk perceptions and attitudes Exposure assessment to support health studies Measurements and modelling Infrastructure and methods Acoustic measurement systems and microbarometer, meteorological stations, SoundPlan, room with acoustic treatment for experimental studies, research van Questionnaires, register-based studies, panel studies, clinical measurements (blood pressure, ECG, blood biomarkers, saliva cortisol, etc.) Members of the Nordic Research Network for Noise Epidemiology 2

The Finnish questionnaire study on wind turbine noise Aim was to study the prevalence of annoyance and sleep disturbance due to wind turbine noise in Finland. In addition, we wanted to see whether the prevalence of symptoms differs between the distance zones around the wind farms. Population Register Centre random sampling Areas 1 5: One adult per residence (max. 200) from three distance zones (<2.5, 2.5 5, and >5 10 km) n=2,828 Areas 6 9: one adult per residence within <2.5 km) n=179 response rates 50% (areas1-5) and 57% (areas 6-9) all non-respondents within <2.5 km from the closest wind turbine (n=473) were contacted by phone 4
Study areas Areas 1 5: Hamina, Honkajoki, Vähäkyrö, Simo, Tervola nominal output of individual turbines MW average distances between the residential buildings and the closest turbine were 1.9 km, 3.9 km and 7.2 km within the three distance zones; the shortest distance was 660 m Areas 6 9: Luhanka, Siikainen, Kauhajoki, Raahe nominal output of individual turbines MW average distance between the residential buildings and the closest turbine was 1.8 km, the shortest distance was 570 m 5
Annoyance indoors at home 6
Sleep disturbance 7
Risk perceptions 8
Symptoms Distance from the closest turbine <2.5 km km >5 10 km % (n) % (n) % (n) p (χ 2 ) Have you had the following symptoms/ailments during the past month (30 days)? Yes Areas 1 5 Headache (n=1115) 43 (144) 46 (186) 41 (154) Dizziness (n=1064) 20 (65) 23 (86) 21 (76) Nausea (n=1015) 5.2 (16) 8.4 (31) 9.2 (31) Tinnitus (n=1078) 29 (95) 25 (97) 30 (110) Pressure sensation in the ear (n=1019) 14 (43) 12 (45) 17 (60) Cardiac arrhythmia (n=1070) 15 (47) 18 (69) 21 (76) Areas 6 9 Headache (n=92) 48 (44) Dizziness (n=90) 19 (17) Nausea (n=89) 11 (10) Tinnitus (n=94) 28 (26) Pressure sensation in the ear (n=88) 15 (13) Cardiac arrhythmia (n=90) 20 (18) How often the following issues have bothered you during the past month (30 days)? Occasionally or more often Areas 1 5 Fatigue (n=1200) 50 (175) 50 (218) 49 (204) Difficulties in falling asleep (n=1207) 39 (138) 45 (194) 40 (167) Waking up too early (n=1193) 51 (180) 54 (232) 53 (220) Stress (n=1148) 30 (102) 35 (145) 31 (120) Anxiety (n=1137) 17 (56) 20 (82) 19 (74) Areas 6 9 Fatigue (n=91) 48 (44) Difficulties in falling asleep (n=94) 44 (41) Waking up too early (n=94) 45 (42) Stress (n=93) 39 (36) Anxiety (n=92) 26 (24) difference between the distance zones 2 difference between areas 1 5 and 6 9 9
Conclusions 1/2 With regard to health effects, annoyance indoors and sleep disturbance are the most relevant endpoints. In this study, Severe annoyance indoors (2.6 %) and severe sleep disturbance (2.6 %) due to wind turbine noise were quite rare. Annoyance was more common in areas 6 9 when compared with areas 1 5. Worry about the potential health effects of wind energy production was common. Worry was more common in areas 6 9 when compared with areas
Conclusions 2/2 The prevalence of symptoms did not differ between the distance zones no dose-response The results of the present study imply that the most prevalent problem in the area of wind power production is worry. However, the possibility of local noise problems in the vicinity of other wind farms cannot be excluded. In any case, means to alleviate worry should be explored. 11
Work continues Ongoing work Modelling of sound pressure levels at the respondents addresses Sound pressure level measurements (including infrasound region) A literature review on the health effect of infrasound is being finalised. In future A register-based study (e.g., medications and diseases around wind farms) Possibly an experimental study 12
