3 Why we snore: Snoring is caused when the flow of air is physically obstructed in one or more airways. The noise of snoring is produced by the vibration of swollen soft tissues as air is forced through the obstructed airway. It is both a sleep and breathing disorder. There are many factors that cause the obstruction: weight gain, fatigue, stress, alcohol, tranquilizers, smoking, anatomical issues, cold symptoms, allergies, and aging. Snoring is important to treat as it is not a sign of good health. Snoring vs. Sleep Apnea: You re not healthy, unless your sleep is healthy. - Dr. William Dement Sleep apnea is a dangerous, potentially deadly medical issue that needs to be addressed. How do you know if you have sleep apnea? There are indicators such as gasping for air while sleeping and waking yourself up (most of the time you think it s because of your snoring). It can only be diagnosed by a doctor. You will most likely be referred to a sleep clinic or an overnight stay at a nearby hospital where they will monitor your sleeping to determine if you have it or not. Where does snoring occur? Snoring can occur in three locations: the mouth, and/or the back of the throat, and/or the nose. Not everyone s snoring occurs from the same location(s) which is why not one singular product can treat everyone s snoring. The greatest myth is that snoring comes from the nose when in most cases it is secondarily. The primary locations are the back of the throat and in the mouth where swollen or collapsed soft tissues are blocking the airways. 3
4 How Snoring is Slowly Killing You. Negative effects on your health: Night after night your snoring is a sign that not only your breathing is disturbed but also your sleep. You are not in fact resting as you should, you are struggling to breathe. The end result is you are not starting a new day charged up but unplugged. Your vital organs such as your brain, heart and lungs did not receive the oxygen nor the proper blood flow, now your energy is low and your brain dimmed. When unchecked and untreated, you start having morning headaches, increased appetite, mood swing symptoms during the day, choking alerts and restless leg syndrome while sleeping. Later on as the snoring increases, symptoms of hypertension, heart disease, and impotence take place leading to sleep apnea, dementia, strokes and even death. Negative effects on your partner s health: When disturbed by a partner s sleep problem the other partner loses an average of 49 minutes of sleep per night, totaling 300 hours of sleep per year. The sleep loss associated with snoring interrupts important recuperative sleep. It can impair a person s ability to perform cognitive tasks involving memory, learning, reasoning, and mathematical processes. Sleep deprivation can result in a level of impairment as severe as a blood alcohol level of 0.1, the equivalent of having consumed six alcoholic beverages. The phenomenon called driving while drowsy has been implicated in 1 out of every 6 fatal car accidents according to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety. 4
5 The reason why there is no silver bullet to solve everyone s snoring problem is due to the fact that snoring is caused by a great multiplicity of factors: Weight gain. It increases fatty tissues that weigh down on your air passages and increase inflammation in the airways. Fatigue, stress from overwork also result in an over-relaxation of airway muscle tone and soft tissues. Overuse of sleeping pills, tranquilizers, alcoholic night caps can also exaggerate the conditions that lead to snoring. Smoking, though not a direct cause still contributes to it by producing excess mucus, thus causing the membranes in the throat to swell and restrict air flow. Abnormal throat anatomy such as elongated or thick uvula, enlargedtongue or tonsils and/or lowering of the soft palate. Also abnormal nasal anatomy such as a deviated septum or nasal polyps. Cold or allergies. Chronic cold symptoms, watery eyes, and a runny nose create inflammation which obstructs the airways that cause snoring. Aging. It reduces the muscle tone of the soft tissues lining your upper respiratory airways around the jowls, throat, and neck. 5
6 What Doesn t Work and Why. Now it becomes clear that one single product cannot address these myriad of conditions coupled with the fact that snoring can occur in three locations: the mouth, the back of the throat, the nose. So, what is the most promising solution to this rather complicated condition? Over the last 20 years, there have been a variety of products made available on the marketplace from the traditional prescription corticosteroid nasal sprays, over-the-counter antihistamines to devices such as mouth guards, chin straps, tongue retainers, nostril dilators, nasal strips as well some unconventional gadgets like pillows or a tennis ball sewn into the back of pajamas. Most have been found to have side effects and/or be cumbersome and expensive or simply ineffective. Laugh and the world laughs with you; snore, and you sleep alone. - Anthony Burgess The market is flooded with expensive devices and pillows. These products don t address the actual cause(s) of snoring, instead it forces your body to sleep in an unnatural position to prevent you from snoring (or sleeping altogether). There are other solutions available such as the ones we list on the following page. 6

They are known to break or have to be custom fit to your mouth which is expensive. It s like a corset - for your chin. If your snoring is located in the mouth or nose this will be ineffective. It does not treat inflammation in the airways. Reports of irritated skin and skin removal when removing the strip as well as allergic reactions to the latex adhesive. Dry mouth, jaw soreness, teeth sensitivity, & excessive drooling. When in place you won t be able to talk, maybe it was your partner s secret motive when purchasing one for you. Reports of irritated skin, cumbersome to wear, sleeplessness. 8 Put an end to your snoring. There are many proven techniques that can help you stop snoring which require patience and some lifestyle changes. The first step is to keep a sleep diary to monitor your snoring. Your non-snoring sleep partner can observe your patterns. Sleep positions reveal a lot and figuring out how you snore can reveal why you snore. When you know why you snore, you ll be one step closer to a solution. For example, closed-mouth snoring may indicate swelling of the tongue where open-mouth snoring may indicate that your sinuses are blocked. There are many things you can do on your own to help stop snoring. Lose weight. Losing even a little bit of weight can reduce fatty tissue in the back of the throat and decrease or even stop your snoring. Exercise can also help to stop snoring. Working out to tone your arms, legs, and abs, for example, also leads to toning the muscles in your throat, which in turn can lead to less snoring. Quit smoking. If you smoke, your chances of snoring are high. Smoking causes airways to be blocked by irritating the membranes in the nose and throat. Avoid alcohol, sleeping pills, and sedatives, especially before bedtime, because they relax the muscles in the throat and interfere with breathing. Talk to your doctor about any prescription medications you re taking. Clear nasal passages. A stuffy nose makes inhalation difficult and creates a vacuum in your throat, which in turn leads to snoring. You can do it naturally with a neti pot or try natural nasal decongestants to help you breathe easily while sleeping. Keep bedroom air moist with a humidifier. Dry air can irritate membranes in the nose and throat. Avoid caffeine and heavy meals within two hours of going to bed, especially dairy products and soymilk. Sleep on your side. Avoid sleeping on your back, as gravity makes it more likely for your tongue and soft tissues to drop and obstruct your airway. 8
