Introduction: Humans have to suffer many problems related with health in day to day life. Aahar (diet), Nidra (sleep) and Brahmacharya (celibacy), are mentioned as three Upastambha (supporting pillars) executing an important role in maintaining the health. Nidra has its important role in healthy life. By getting a good & sufficient sleep one can get ready for new work. Nidranasha is considered as an independent disease in the context of Vata Nanatmaja Vyadhi and also as a symptom in various physical and psychological disorders.

Cont Insomnia is subdivided into difficulty falling asleep (sleep onset insomnia), frequent or sustained awakenings (sleep maintenance insomnia), or early morning awakenings (sleep offset insomnia), though most insomnia patients present with two or more of these symptoms. A survey conducted by WHO in India revels that about 35 % of respondents have reported mild to extreme difficulty associated with sleep.

Brief concept of Nidra in Ayurveda: Nidra is considered second amongst the Trividh Upastambha. One, who gets sound sleep at night, can digest the food well, his Kayagni is enhanced & there is proper nourishment of the body. In Charak samhita, When the Mana as well as the soul get exhausted or become inactive and the senses become inactive then the individual gets sleep.

Cont In Sushrut samhita, sleep occurs when the Chetanaasthaanam (place of sense) i.e. Hridaya is covered by Tamoguna. In addition when the mind becomes Tamoadhika or body becomes Kaphaadhika, Indriyas become inactive and sleep occurs. Sleep is one among the 13 vegas (urges). The suppression of urge of sleep may cause several harmful effects in the body.

Types of Nidra in Ayurveda: Types of Nidra in Ayurveda 1.Svabhavika (natural) 2.Asvabhavika (abnormal) Charaka (su.21) Sushruta(sha.4) Vrudhha Vaagbhata(Su.9) 1.Tamabhava Nidra 1.Vaishnavi 1.Tamabhava Nidra 2.Sleshma Samudbhava Nidra 3.Manah Sharira Shrama Sambhava Nidra 4.Agantuki Nidra 5.Vyadhyanuvartini Nidra 6.Ratri Svabhava Prabhava Nidra 2.Taamasi 2.Sleshma Samudbhava Nidra 3. Vaikaariki 3.Manah Shrama Sambhava Nidra 4.Sharira Shrama Sambhava Nidra 5. Agantuki Nidra 6. Vyadhyanuvartini Nidra 7. Ratri Svabhava Prabhava Nidra

Type of insomnia: Transients insomnia lasts for less than a week and results from environmental changes such as climate changes, travel and stress etc. Acute or short term insomnia lasts for less than a month and results from ongoing stress, illness etc. Chronic insomnia lasts for longer than a month and results from long term health problems, stress and anxiety.

Physiology of sleep: MODERN ASPECT Rhythm of sleep is controlled and regulated by two brain processes. The restorative process is a response to how long one stays awake.the longer the period of time one goes without effective sleep, the stronger the drive to sleep. The second process controls the timing of sleep and wakefulness during the day-night cycle. The timing of sleep is controlled by the suprachiasmatic nucleus of the hypothalamus, which responds to light and causes sleepiness at night when it is dark.

Hormonal regulators : Melatonin is important to regulate normal sleep cycles. This hormone is produced by the pineal gland, a small endocrine gland found near the center of the brain. Melatonin is produced during "dark hours" of sleep and is released in response to changes in light and inhibits the neurotransmitters involved in arousal, such as histamine, norepinephrine, dopamine, and serotonin.

Cause of Nidranasha : Charak(cha.su.21) Sushrut (Su.Sha.4) Kaya virechana, Shirovirechana,Chardhana Bhaya, Chinta, Krodha. Dhoomapana, Vyayama,Upavasa Raktamokshana Asuhkashyaa Karya (engaged in some important work) Kala( Like old age and Other than routine sleeping hours). Vikara (diseases), Vataprakopa Due to increased condition of Vayu and Pitta Due to the mental harassment or increased stage of mind Due to accidents, hurt or any injury

Other causes: Rukhshana Ahara, laghu Ahara, Tikshana Ahara etc. Poor nutrition, digestion Imbalance of the nervous system Disruption of natural biological rhythms, environmental factors like noise, light or extreme temperatures (hot or cold ) that interfere with sleep. Some insomnia is caused by stimulated drugs, such as amphetamine, cocaine and nicotine.

Psychological issues: Major depressive disorder, anxiety disorder, schizophrenia, dementia etc. Medical conditions: High blood pressure, tumors, stroke, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, asthma, Parkinson s and Alzheimer s diseases, arthritis, depression etc.

Signs and Symptoms: Ayurveda describes Nidranasha as a symptom, as a disorder and even sometimes as a complication of certain diseases. Particular symptoms arising during Nidranasha are Angamard, Shiro Gaurava, Jrumbha, Jadya, Glani, Bharma, Apankti, Tandra and Vataj Roga. (As.su.7-64)

Management: Vayu is considered as prime culprit for Nindranasha it disturbs physiology of sleep by disturbing secretion of various neurotransmitters like serotonin, meletonine etc. Generally this happens by Chala and Rukhsha property of Vayu. Hence, the drug, formulation or procedure that check this phenomena can be helpful for Nindranash. There are some diet and life style tips, various formulations and some procedure are mentioned in Ayurveda texts.

Panchakarma Treatment: Abhyanga, Sanvahan, Udsadan, Snana, Karnapuran, Akshitarpan, Shirobhyanga & Padabhyanga are desirable for best results in the management of sleep disorders, body relaxation and pain relief. Shirodhara : Shirodhara with desirable medicated oil relieves mental stress and also pacifies Vata thus helping the mind and body to calm down.

Palliative Treatment: Ashwagandha, Jatamansi, Brahmi, Mandukparni, Parsika yavani, Yashtimadhu, Ajvayan, Jatiphal, shankhpushpi etc. are good brain tonics, sedative and useful in overcoming the sleep related problems. Mamsyadi kvath, Tagradi kwatha, Brahmi vati, Sarpagandhadi vati etc. are promotes peaceful sleep.

Yogic Practices Practice of Anuloma viloma and Meditation along with the practice of Yama and Niyama. Suryanamaskara, Padmasana, Pascimottanasana and Shavasana etc. Deep relaxation techniques, Yoga Nidra. Yoga reduces stress, help in normal and better function of mind.

Pathyapathya for Nidranasha: Pleasant smell, listening to good music and news, keeping the mind in a calm and happy state, living without worry, remaining always satisfied, embracing a beautiful lady like creeper are the Pathyas for sound sleep.

Advised food : Shali, Godhum, Mash, milk, meat sup, sweet with rich fat, curd of buffalo milk, Draksha (grapes), Sita (candysugar),.ikshu (sugarcane) and its various preparations to take at night. Nidana Parivarjana : Before starting medication for the sleep related disorders any psychiatric, neurological condition and chronic medical illness should be treated first.

According to new researches tips for sound sleep are as follow: Get up and go to bed at the same time every day, even on weekends: Keep bedroom quiet, dark, cool and comfortable: Avoid caffeine, alcohol, and nicotine 4-6 hours before bedtime: Avoid exercise before bedtime: Avoid eating or drinking just before going to bed: At sleep time priority should be given to sleep:

Conclusion: Sleep is one of the basic instincts of life. Health and longevity is conquered by proper sleep. Mutual relationship between Vata and Rajas causes Rajo Guna Vruddhi, which intern cause suppression of effect of Tamas at the psychological level leading to loss of sleep. Balanced diet & lifestyle giving due respect to the biological clock, Nidana Parivarjan, Panchakarma, Yoga & palliative treatment provides a complete package for getting rid of sleep disorders.
