1 Newsletter May 2016 World Hypertension Day - 17 May 2016 Celebrate World Hypertension Day (WHD) on 17 May and contribute to improving awareness of Hypertension. For the five-year period , the theme of WHD will be Know Your Numbers with the goal of increasing high blood pressure awareness in all populations around the world.

2 World Anti-Tobacco Month - May 2016 Would you knowingly put yourself or a loved one in harm s way? It s not likely that you would and yet research shows that this is exactly what you do when you light up. Celebrate World Hypertension Day (WHD) on 17 May and contribute to improving awareness of Hypertension. For the five-year period , the theme of WHD will be Know Your Numbers with the goal of increasing high blood pressure awareness in all populations around the world. World Hypertension Day was first inaugurated in May 2005 and has become an annual event ever since. The purpose of the day is to promote public awareness of hypertension and to encourage citizens of all countries to prevent and control this silent killer, the modern epidemic. Hypertension, or high blood pressure, is a chronic medical condition in which the blood pressure is elevated in the arteries. This means the heart has to work too hard to pump the blood through the system. It is the leading risk factor for disease burden worldwide. Approximately 4 in 10 adults have raised blood pressure which often goes undiagnosed, but healthy attitudes can help combat hypertension. What are the symptoms of hypertension? There is no guarantee that a person with hypertension will present any symptoms of the condition. About 33% of people do not know that they have high blood pressure, and this ignorance can last for years. For this reason, it is advisable to undergo periodic blood pressure screenings even when no symptoms are present. Extremely high blood pressure may, however, lead to some symptoms and these include: Severe headaches Fatigue or confusion

3 Dizziness Nausea Problems with vision Chest pains Breathing problems Irregular heartbeat Blood in the urine. What causes hypertension? Though the exact causes of hypertension are usually unknown, there are several factors that have been highly associated with the condition. These include: Smoking Obesity or being overweight Being obese / overweight as a child - a research team at the Indiana University School of Medicine found that obese/overweight children are much more likely to suffer from hypertension during adulthood Diabetes Sedentary lifestyle Lack of physical activity High levels of salt intake (sodium sensitivity). According to the American Heart Association (AHA), sodium consumption should be limited to 1,500 milligrams per day Insufficient calcium, potassium, and magnesium consumption Vitamin D deficiency High levels of alcohol consumption Stress Aging Medicines such as birth control pills Genetics and a family history of hypertension Chronic kidney disease Adrenal and thyroid problems or tumours. How can hypertension be prevented? Hypertension can best be prevented by adjusting your lifestyle so that proper diet and exercise are key components. It is important to maintain a healthy weight, reduce salt intake, reduce alcohol intake and reduce stress. To prevent damage to critical organs and conditions such as stroke, heart attack and kidney failure that may be caused by high blood pressure, it is important to screen, diagnose, treat and control hyper tension in its earliest stages. This can also be accomplished by increasing public awareness and increasing the frequency of screenings for the condition. How World Hypertension Day is celebrated World Hypertension Day is dedicatedly celebrated every year on 17th of May since 2005 to raise the common public awareness about the hypertension through the variety of activities and events. Health professionals and medical professionals from the government and nongovernment organizations participate in the campaign celebration and support in organizing lots of events for easily understanding of the public. Some of the activities which are getting organized on annual celebration of the campaign are public forum, debates on the subjects of high blood pressure, brisk walk or run activities, health screening, free blood pressure check-up camp, media write-up, banners and poster distribution in the schools, colleges and other educational institutions, discussions, quiz competitions in the schools and colleges, messages distribution through the TV and radio channels and lots of other activities.

4 Meeting of the medical professional expertise and advisers are held for highlighting the common problems of hypertension on national and international level, discussing the new and most easy preventive and control measures for the people with hypertension. Even when you have left the room and the smoke can no longer be seen, poisonous substances cling to surfaces that your loved ones may touch. Passive smoking (second hand smoking) and third hand smoke (residue that clings to surfaces) can negatively affect health too. It is a fact that tobacco use is the single most preventable cause of cancer, including many other non-communicable diseases. Tobacco is the only legally available consumer product which kills people when it is used entirely as intended. (The Oxford Medical Companion 1994) Here we share the facts with you in the hope that you will be motivated to quit the habit and to take charge of your health:

5 Reduce Your Cancer Risk: 1. Think Through Why Should You Quit Tobacco-related diseases kill over South Africans and six million people worldwide annually. Tobacco usage increases the risk of cancer of the lungs, oesophagus, mouth, bladder, pancreas, kidney, stomach, cervix and breast. Smoking during pregnancy and exposure to second-hand smoke are both linked to miscarriages, low birth weights and stillbirths. Babies who breathe in second-hand smoke have a higher risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). It s not only cigarettes that are harmful to health: hookah pipe (hubbly bubbly) smoking, cigars, pipes and tobacco products consumed orally or nasally (snuff, snus, chewing tobacco), also have a detrimental effect on health. Electronic cigarettes have not been scientifically proven to be safe either. 2. Decide to Quit: Quitting tobacco use can have a positive effect on your health and lifestyle including: reducing the risk of cancer and respiratory diseases lowering heart rate and blood pressure breathing better and being able to walk without shortness of breath having more physical energy being a good role model for children & protecting them living a longer and healthier life Today is as good a time as any to make the choice to empower yourself and kick butt for a healthy and happy life. So: decide to quit set a quit date start mentally preparing yourself to quit make sure you have support to ensure you quit for good 3.
