Some notes about the MAT semester conversion proposal: Courses that were deleted or combined mirror what was changed in the semester conversion for the middle childhood licensure program at the undergraduate level Besides 33 semester hours of graduate coursework (old program = 50 quarter hours), students need undergrad courses to meet licensure requirements. These will be the same as the undergraduate middle childhood requirements.

Some notes about the MAT semester conversion proposal: The new program as we imagine it being offered at the moment requires more full-time commitment from grad students (8 months vs. 6 months); Education faculty are considering ways to provide more flexible scheduling to meet the field requirements and student needs The Education Department is looking at expanding the MAT program to other high-need licensure areas (e.g. secondary-level math and science teaching licenses)

Master of Arts in Education (MAE) Semester Conversion Proposal Professional School meeting Thursday, June 3, 2010

MAE program Offered to licensed teachers Consists of core courses, major courses, and elective strand courses Some of our MAE options allow teachers to add an endorsement to their existing teaching license (e.g., TESOL, Reading, add grade levels or concentration areas to their license)

Some notes about the MAE semester conversion proposal: We will have six distinct program options for students: an MAE in Reading (which includes reading endorsement coursework), or an MAE in Curriculum & Instruction with five different elective strand options: TESOL endorsement; Early Childhood 4-5 Generalist Endorsement; Middle Childhood 4-6 Generalist Endorsement; Professional Development Strand; or Theory & Research Strands. Programs that lead to an additional endorsement are 33 semester hours; programs that do not lead to an endorsement are 30 semester hours (comparable to the quarter hours we require now)

Some notes about the MAE semester conversion proposal: We removed two C&I elective strand options (Technology and Middle Childhood) that did not lead to an endorsement option. Students will still be able to take the C&I Professional Development elective strand and choose courses that have a technology or middle childhood focus.

Some notes about the MAE semester conversion proposal: We added the Middle Childhood Generalist endorsement as a new C&I strand. This endorsement program is offered at the undergraduate level and we wanted to offer it as a Master s elective strand option as well. We are not creating new courses but using existing courses (some of which will become UG/Grad slash courses) in this strand.

Some notes about the MAE semester conversion proposal: We added a new Theory and Research elective C&I strand. We have been asked by the College to consider offering an Ed.D. or Ph.D. program in education. Education faculty felt that offering this MAE C&I elective strand would be a good pilot study to determine if advanced programs will be feasible here (i.e., attract a reliable cohort of students). We created three new courses but should have faculty to teach them because they will be offered less frequently than other classes, and because we eliminated some courses in the MAE core.
