Vaping, Marijuana & Prevention
E-Cigarettes Topics Hash Oil Prevention Strategies Resources
Current Substance Use Among OC Students
Current Use Among HBCSD 7th Grade Students
E-Cigarettes
E-Cigarettes (a.k.a. vapes, e-cigs) Battery-powered devices that use a heated coil to create an aerosol from a liquid, often containing flavorings and nicotine.
Cartridge Cig-a-like Disposable Cig-a-like Disposable E-hookah
Vape Pens Smok Stik V8 Mods
Suorin Drop PHIX Pax JUUL
N/A E-Liquid E-Liquid FDA-approved E-Liquid
Vape pens, e-cigarettes and e-juice are not yet regulated by the FDA or any government agency. These devices are not currently approved or proven as a quit-smoking aid. Vaping releases carcinogens like formaldehyde, though in lower levels than conventional cigarettes. Dripping increases these amounts.
Poison Control Calls: Liquid Nicotine & E-Cigarettes
Cigarette vs E-Cigarette Use: 11th Grade
Do youth who vape move on to smoking? A recent meta-analysis found that youth who had reported current e-cigarette use were more than 4 times as likely as non-users to report current cigarette smoking in follow-up surveys.
The legal age for buying cigarettes, vapes and e-liquid 21 is.
What Do You Say? Your child sees their older cousin vaping in the backyard during a family party.
Discuss age limits and brain development Hints Discuss harmful chemicals, lack of regulation and nicotine addiction Discuss familial pressure and separating the behavior from the person
Hash Oil
Hash Oil (a.k.a. wax, BHO, dabs) Chemically-extracted concentrates of THC and sometimes other components of marijuana.
Wax Shatter Crumble
THC E-Liquid Dab on Coil
Preloaded Cartridge Cig-like Vapes PAX Era
Typical Dab Rig Dab Rig in Use
THC Levels Comparison
Like alcohol, marijuana affects the parts of the brain that work on learning, memory and attention. Using marijuana and driving can increase the risk of a crash. Combining with alcohol worsens the risk. While only 9% of users become dependent, the risk nearly doubles (17%) for those who start as teens.
Legalization Adults 21 and over may now use, possess, transport, cultivate and give away small quantities of marijuana. Illegal to use in public or non-smoking areas Impaired driving still illegal (but no per se THC blood level)
Legalization Criminal penalties reduced even further On-campus possession and sale are still illegal. District policies on possession are unchanged. Failed drug tests can still result in termination. Medical marijuana is not exempted.
What Do You Say? Your child says their friend offered them an edible.
Promote open and calm communication Hints Discuss age limits and brain development Discuss friendship and peer pressure Practice refusal skills
Five Key Prevention Strategies
Outside Pressure: - Friends & Classmates - Family - Media & Advertising - Society & Environment Inside Pressure: - Acceptance - Stress & Emotions - Boredom and Curiosity - Independence & Rebellion
Be there for your child, and engage with their schoolwork, interests and activities. Watch for dramatic changes. 1
Model responsible attitudes and behaviors around alcohol, medicine and stress coping. Check in with the parents of your child s friends. 2
Get to know your child s friends, and talk about peer pressure and friendship. Notice any changes or influences. 3
Establish clear rules and fair consequences. Know the who, what, when, where when your child goes out. 4
Talk regularly about the risks of alcohol and drugs. Use teachable moments to start the conversation. 5
