2 Public Opinion Strategies is pleased to present the key findings of a telephone survey conducted in New Orleans, Louisiana. The survey was completed December 16-18, 2014 among 200 registered voters, with 60 cell phone interviews, and has a margin of error of +6.93%. Glen Bolger was the principal researcher on this project. Kyle Clark was the project director, and Alex Geroux provided analytical support.

4 Two-thirds of New Orleans voters favor an ordinance that extends the smoke-free law to include all workplaces. As you may know, Louisiana has a statewide smoke-free law that prohibits smoking in restaurants and workplaces. Would you favor or oppose a local ordinance in New Orleans that extends the law to prohibit smoking in all workplaces, including bars and casinos? 30 New Orleans Survey ~ December 16-18, THE BOTTOM LINE By a two-to-one margin, voters in New Orleans support an ordinance to extend the statewide smoke-free law to prohibit smoking in all workplaces, including bars and casinos. Support is strong among the city s majority of Democrats. Geographically, support by City Council District ranges from 60% to 75%. The proposal unites African Americans and whites all voters in the city. There is little difference in support between conservatives and liberals. Even 38% of regular smokers back a smoke-free ordinance (regular smokers are just 8% of voters). Voters say they are more inclined to go out to bars and casinos if the smoke-free law were extended. Even regular smokers say they are more likely to go out to bars and casinos. Voters overwhelmingly say the rights of employees and customers to breathe clean air are more important than the rights of smokers and owners to allow smoking. They also say they are more likely to support a candidate who backs the proposal to extend the smokefree law to all workplaces, including bars and casinos by two and a half to one over those who say they are less likely to back such a candidate. Support for extending the smoke-free law to all workplaces in New Orleans is strong and deep. Voters say they will reward candidates who back it.
