1 because... I m a Raze adult advisor I smoked and I know firsthand about the dangers. I want to help others be tobacco free. I am the daughter of two tobacco users. I never started and I feel that educating kids will encourage them to live tobacco free too. I believe in the Raze message and I am proud to support the enthusiasm of my crew!
2 ARE YOU READY TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE? Become a Raze Adult Advisor and help teens find their voice against tobacco. Raze members have witnessed the harmful and deadly effects of tobacco first hand. RAZEWV.COM THE TOBACCO-PREVENTION MOVEMENT IS PERSONAL. Teens need an adult like you to help facilitate a Raze Crew in their school or community. GET INVOLVED. Help teens share their passion and create a new generation of healthy, tobacco-free West Virginians. Learn more about becoming a Raze Adult Advisor at RazeWV.com/ Join/Adult-Advisor
3 ADULT ADVISOR FAQS WHAT IS RAZE? Raze is a statewide youth tobacco-prevention movement that raises tobacco awareness and exposes Big Tobacco s schemes to get teens hooked on cigarettes and spit tobacco. Raze is not anti-tobacco user everyone is invited to be part of the movement. WHAT IS AN ADULT ADVISOR? Adult Advisors work with teens from their community to tear down Big Tobacco s lies. Adult Advisors facilitate meetings and Commotions, organize trips to Tobacco Free Day at the Capitol and the Regional Raze Kickoff Event, and serve as a point of contact. Adult Advisors help teens get the most out of Raze membership and encourage teens to apply for scholarships, join the Teen Advisory Council and participate in other skillsdevelopment opportunities. WHY IS RAZE DIFFERENT THAN OTHER VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES? Raze teens and Adult Advisors are passionate. Raze is visible, active, involved and enthusiastic. Adult Advisors receive funding. Adult Advisors receive a $1050 mini-grant each year - $500 of that mini-grant must be used toward the Raze Crew while the other $550 can be taken as compensation or used at the Adult Advisors discretion. Raze is measurably changing communities. Between 2000 and 2013, West Virginia experienced a 124% increase in high school students who have never tried/used any form of tobacco. But there is still much more to change spit tobacco use remains steady and with new tobacco products being marketed as less harmful, there are still Big Tobacco lies to tear down. The Raze movement can be paired with other youth groups like scouting and community clubs. WHY SHOULD I GET INVOLVED? Teens need an adult like you to start and facilitate a Raze Crew. Many Raze teens have witnessed the harmful and deadly effects of tobacco on family members and friends. Adult Advisors help teens find their voices for tobacco prevention. RAZEWV.COM ARE YOU READY TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE?
4 FACT SHEET RAZE (RAZ) V. RAZED, RAZ-ING. To tear down or demolish. Raze is a statewide youth tobacco-prevention movement that raises tobacco awareness and exposes Big Tobacco s schemes to get teens hooked on cigarettes and spit tobacco. Raze is not against tobacco users; Raze is anti-big Tobacco. The goal of Raze is to reduce tobacco use among teens. West Virginia teens are working to tear down Big Tobacco s lies every day in schools and communities across the state. COMMOTION (KUH-MOH-SHUN) N. Turbulent motion; agitation; tumult. Raze commotions are teen-led protests: peaceful demonstrations to draw attention to the dangers of tobacco and to the lies being told by Big Tobacco. A Raze commotion may be based on letting people know about some of the toxic chemicals found in tobacco products, the tactics the tobacco industry uses to market its products, etc. Secondhand smoke kills more than 65,000 people annually in the United States. Stats like these keep Raze teen activists fired up to fight Big Tobacco. RAZE IS A TEEN-LED MOVEMENT Raze is a way for teens to help other teens avoid the dangerous trap of Big Tobacco s marketing ploys and false promises. Raze is visible, active, involved & enthusiastic. Any West Virginia teen can join Raze. Since its inception in 2001, thousands of teens have helped fight Big Tobacco. JOIN THE RAZE ACTIVISTS Believe it? We do. Here s our anthem: We are Raze, West Virginia s teens, tearing down the lies of Big Tobacco and fighting them with all we ve got: our passion, our power and our minds. Join up if you think you can handle it (getting involved means more than just wearing our t-shirt.) Smoker, non-smoker whatever...we re all about fighting Big Tobacco. IS RAZE WORKING? Between 2000 and 2013, WV experienced: A 124% increase in high school students who have never tried/used any form of tobacco (46.1% in 2013; was 20.6% in 2000). A 44% increase in middle school students who never tried cigarettes. A 52% decrease in high school students who currently smoke cigarettes (18.6% in 2013; was 38.5% in 2000). Source: Youth Tobacco Survey RAZEWV.COM facebook.com/razewv twitter.com/wv_raze instagram.com/wv_raze THERE S MORE WORK TO DO. 46,000 WEST VIRGINIA KIDS ALIVE TODAY WILL DIE EARLY BECAUSE OF PRODUCTS MARKETED BY TOBACCO COMPANIES.
