4 Station Dean, Selection Committee for the Philip Morris Tobacco Company Excellence in Tobacco Production Awards, Selection Committee for the R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company Outstanding Extension Agent Award, Graduate Student Training University of Kentucky Major Professor - One M.S. student in Plant and Soil Science Committee Member - Two Ph.D. students in Plant and Soil Science University of Tennessee Major Professor - One M.S. student in Plant and Soil Science Committee Member - One Ph.D. student in Plant and Soil Science - One Ph.D. student in Agricultural Economics - Two M.S. students in Plant and Soil Science - One M.S. student in Agricultural Economics *-Eight M.S. students in Entomology and Plant Pathology * (All students were supported by grants obtained by the tobacco breeding program; theses research involved breeding for insect resistance in tobacco.) Cultivar Releases Released KT 210LC in KT 210LC has good black shank resistance and moderate fusarium wilt resistance. It also has high resistance to black root rot, wildfire, and tobacco mosaic virus, but it is susceptible to tobacco vein mottling virus and tobacco etch virus. Released KT 209LC in KT 209LC has superior black shank resistance and high yield potential. It also has high resistance to black root rot, wildfire, tobacco mosaic virus, tobacco vein mottling virus, and tobacco etch virus. It has higher black shank resistance than any other burley cultivar. Released KT D8LC in It has high black shank resistance and high yield potential. Released KT 206LC in It has higher black shank resistance than any other burley cultivar. It also has moderate resistance to blue mold and very high yield potential. Released KT D6LC in It has high black shank resistance combined with resistance to tobacco mosaic virus, wildfire, and black root rot. It also has very high yield potential and is the first dark tobacco hybrid cultivar to be developed. Released NL MadoleLC, KY 171LC, TN D950LC, and ms TN D950LC in The nornicotine content of these cultivars has been significantly reduced as a result of removing converter plants from foundation seed lots. Released KT D4LC in It has better black shank resistance and higher yield potential than any existing dark fire-cured variety.
5 Released KT 204LC in It has higher black shank resistance than any existing burley variety and has yield potential equal to the highest yielding non-resistant cultivars. Released TN 90LC, TN 86LC, TN 97LC, KT 200LC, and KY 907LC in Due to widespread concerns about nicotine to nornicotine conversion (which is believed to have significant negative health related consequences) among existing burley tobacco cultivars, TN 90, TN 86, TN 97, and KT 200 were re-released as low conversion versions of the original cultivars. The nornicotine content of TN 90LC, TN 86LC, TN 97LC, KT 200LC, and KY 907LC has been significantly reduced as a result of removing converter plants from foundation seed lots. Released KT 200 in First release of the Kentucky-Tennessee Tobacco Improvement initiative. KT 200 has higher black shank resistance than other burley cultivars. Released TN 97 in TN 97 is a hybrid burley cultivar that is similar to TN 90 but has better black shank resistance and higher yield potential. One of the 3 most widely grown burley cultivars in the United States. Released TN D950 in TN D950 is a dark fire-cured cultivar that is resistant to black root rot, black shank, tobacco mosaic virus, and wildfire. The combination of yield, curing characteristics, and disease resistance of TN D950 is superior to existing dark tobacco cultivars. TN D950 has rapidly become the disease resistant dark fire-cured cultivar used by most Tennessee growers. Released TN D94 in TN D94 is a dark fire-cured cultivar that is resistant to black root rot, black shank, tobacco mosaic virus, and wildfire. The growth habit and curing characteristics of TN D94 are similar to Madole type dark tobaccos, which are considered by growers to be more desirable than newer, disease resistant dark tobacco cultivars. Released two germplasm lines, GR 139S and GR 139NS, in These are near-isogenic lines differing only for trichome type. GR 139S has exudate-secreting trichomes and GR 139NS has non-secreting trichomes. These lines provide a means of investigating the role of leaf surface chemistry in insect resistance, disease resistance, and smoke flavor and aroma. Released TN 90 in TN 90 was the first burley variety having resistance to seven diseases. It has excellent quality and a significantly smaller stalk than most burley cultivars. It is the leading burley cultivar in the United States and is generally regarded within the industry as the most widely grown burley cultivar in the world. Released TN 86 in TN 86 was the first tobacco cultivar of any type having resistance to tobacco vein mottling and tobacco etch viruses and normal leaf trichome exudates. TN 86 is also resistant to wildfire, black root rot, and black shank. It is one of the five most widely grown cultivar throughout the burley producing states and is
6 widely grown in burley producing countries worldwide. TN 86 has also been used extensively as a source of disease resistance by other tobacco breeding programs. Approximately 12 cultivars having TN 86 as a major component of their pedigree have been released since Released DF 485 in DF 485 was the first dark fire-cured cultivar having resistance to black shank, black root rot, wildfire, and tobacco mosaic virus.
