A good day starts with a Good Night s Sleep Sufficient sleep is not a luxury it is a necessity and should be thought of as a vital sign of good health. HEALTHY YOU!! Make healthy food choices. According to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans , a healthy eating plan: Emphasizes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and fat-free or low-fat milk and milk products Includes lean meats, poultry, fish, beans, eggs, and nuts Is low in saturated fats, trans fats, cholesterol, salt (sodium), and added sugars. Stays within your daily calorie needs. Be smoke free. If you are ready to quit, call QUIT-NOW ( ) for free resources, including free quit coaching, a free quit plan, and free educational materials. Be active to improve overall health. Try simple things such as taking the stairs instead of the elevator. Be active for at least 2½ hours a week. How much physical activity do you need? Children and adolescents should do 60 minutes (1 hour) or more of physical activity each day. Get enough sleep. Insufficient sleep is associated with a number of chronic diseases and conditions such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, obesity, and depression. Sufficient sleep is increasingly being recognized as an essential aspect of chronic disease prevention. Selinsgrove Elementary kindergarten registration dates for the school year will be held on February 27, 28 and March 1, 2, and 3 by appointment only. There will be a Kindergarten Information meeting on January 18, 2017 at the Elementary school from 6:30-7:30PM. Parents who have already completed and returned their packets to the Elementary School or bring their packets with them to the meeting, will have the opportunity to sign up for an appointment after the meeting. Type of Physical Activity Children Adolescents Flu season is in full swing and it's starting to look like a severe one, U.S. health officials said Friday. That's why they're urging persons to get their shots before it's too late. "We are still a few weeks from the peak of flu season, and then there's the second half of season to go," said Lynnette Brammer, an epidemiologist with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. " It s not too late to get your flu shot! 3 V O L U M E 1, I S S U E 4 P A G E 3 Nicotine in E-Cigs Can Trigger Lifelong Addiction The earlier youngsters start using nicotine -- even in the form of e-cigarettes - - the harder it is for them to quit a habit that could last a lifetime. So says a new report from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), the leading organization representing pediatricians in the United States. The AAP's statement comes after a Dec. 8 report from the U.S. Surgeon General's office, which noted that e- cigarette use rose 900 percent among U.S. high school students between 2011 and By 2014, more high school kids were using e-cigarettes than traditional smoked cigarettes, the Surgeon General said. Nicotine addiction at a very young age may up the odds for smoking well into adulthood, the pediatricians' group says. According to prior research, about two-thirds of children who smoke in 6th grade will become regular adult smokers, compared to 46 percent of those who start smoking in 11th grade. According to the new report, 90 percent of tobacco-dependent adults started smoking before age 18. For teens, even infrequent smoking greatly increases the risk of addiction. One study found that teens who smoked only monthly had a tenfold increased risk of tobacco addiction. How closely is healthy eating linked to successful academic achievement? Nicotine -- not just tobacco -- is addictive and harmful to the developing brain." The rapidly developing brains of children and teens are particularly susceptible to nicotine addiction, the AAP added. The report also said that nicotine is linked with many diseases such as certain cancers, kidney disease, inflammatory bowel disease, osteoporosis and obesity. The drug also harms sexual function and fertility in men and women. Evidence has shown that specific dietary practices are related to academic achievement. Specifically: Student participation in the USDA School Breakfast Program is associated with increased academic grades and standardized test scores, reduced absenteeism, and improved cognitive function (e.g., memory). Skipping breakfast is associated with decreased cognitive performance (e.g., alertness, attention, memory, processing of complex visual display, and problem solving) among students. Lack of adequate consumption of specific foods, such as fruits, vegetables, or dairy products, is associated with lower grades among students. Deficits of specific nutrients (i.e., vitamins A, B6, B12, C, folate, iron, zinc, and calcium) are associated with lower grades and higher rates of absenteeism and tardiness among students. Hunger due to insufficient food intake is associated with lower grades, higher rates of absenteeism, repeating a grade, and an inability to focus among students..that s how close!

4 Medication Safety Checklist TIPS FOR PARENTS TIPS FOR PARENTS OF KIDS AGES 0-5 Put all medicine up and away and out of sight, including your own. Make sure that all medicine and vitamins are stored out of children s reach and sight. Think about places where kids get into medicine, like in purses, counters and nightstands. Remember products you might not think about as medicine. Products such as diaper rash remedies, vitamins and eye drops need to be stored safely. Use the dosing device that comes with the medicine. Kitchen spoons aren t all the same, and a teaspoon or tablespoon used for cooking won t measure the same amount of medicine as the dosing device. Write clear instructions for caregivers about your child s medicine. When other caregivers are giving your child medicine, they need to know what medicine to give, when to give it and how much to give. TIPS FOR PARENTS OF KIDS AGES 6-10 Model responsible medicating behavior. What kids see you do is a stronger message than what you tell them to do. Make sure to keep medicine out of children s reach, and read and follow over-the-counter (OTC) Drug Facts and prescription labels. Teach your child that medicine should always be given by an adult. It s important for kids to know that they should not take medicine on their own. Adults can help make sure kids are taking medicine correctly. Don t refer to medicine as candy. Referring to medicine as candy may encourage children to take medicine on their own. Take the time to read the medicine label with your child, even for OTC medicine. As your kids get older, it s important to teach them how to read and understand the label before taking medicine.

5 TIPS FOR PARENTS OF KIDS AGES 11 AND OLDER Teach older kids how to read the over-the-counter (OTC) Drug Facts or prescription label. Take the time to teach them about each section of a label and its purpose. Talk to older kids about the importance of only taking medicine that is meant for them. Taking medicine that belongs to someone else or misusing medicine, even OTCs, can cause harm. Instruct older kids that medicine labels are rules, not guidelines. Be sure pre-teens and teens know that taking more than the recommended dose will not help them get better any faster, and it could hurt them. Check in with older kids and talk about medicine they are taking regularly. Even pre-teens and teens who need to take medicine every day may make errors in dosing or dosing frequency, so it is important to talk with them about taking medicine responsibly. 6 PARENTS, Every year during Fire Prevention Week (FPW), the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) sounds the alarm about keeping our homes and our kids safe from fire. FPW teaches kids the importance of having working smoke alarms in the bedroom. Location matters when it comes to your smoke alarm. Did you know that roughly half of home fire deaths result from fires reported at night between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m. when most people are asleep? That s the message behind this year s Fire Prevention campaign, Hear the Beep Where You Sleep. Every Bedroom Needs a Working Smoke Alarm! As a family, complete the Fire Prevention Checklist. If all boxes are checked, CONGRATULATIONS. If there are some boxes not checked, work together to help fix the problem. Fire Prevention Check list Do you have working smoke alarm on every level of your home? Do you have working smoke alarms inside every bedroom? Does a grown-up test your smoke alarms at least once a month? Do you know the sound of your smoke alarms? Are your smoke alarms less than 10 years old? (Look on the back of smoke alarms for the date. If they are more than 10 years old, you need new ones.) Does your family have a home fire escape plan? Do you know two ways out of every room? Does your plan have an outside meeting place? Does your family have a fire drill at least twice a year? Does everyone at home know how to call the fire department once they are outside? Do you get outside and stay outside if the smoke alarm sounds?

7 Although winter comes as no surprise, many of us are not ready for its arrival. If you are prepared for the hazards of winter, you will be more likely to stay safe and healthy when temperatures start to fall. Take These Steps to prepare Your Home Many people prefer to remain indoors in the winter, but staying inside is no guarantee of safety. Take these steps to keep your home safe and warm during the winter months. Winterize your home. PLAN AHEAD FOR WINTER WEATHER Winter storms and cold temperatures can be hazardous. Stay safe and healthy by planning ahead. Prepare your home and cars. Prepare for power outages and outdoor activity. Install weather stripping, insulation, and storm windows. Insulate water lines that run along exterior walls. Clean out gutters and repair roof leaks. Check your heating systems. Have your heating system serviced professionally to make sure that it is clean, working properly, and ventilated to the outside. Inspect and clean fireplaces and chimneys. Install a smoke detector. Test batteries monthly and replace them twice a year. Have a safe alternate heating source and alternate fuels available. Prevent carbon monoxide (CO) emergencies. Install a CO detector to alert you of the presence of the deadly, odorless, colorless gas. Check batteries when you change your clocks in the fall and spring. Learn symptoms of CO poisoning: headache, dizziness, weakness, upset stomach, vomiting, chest pain, and confusion.

In other words, of the students who drank soda pop at least once a day, more earned D s/f s than A s. The percentages for each of the health risk behaviors do not add up to 100%. This is because each bar shows the percentage of students getting that academic grade who engage in that behavior. For example, 22% of students getting mostly A s drank a can, bottle, or glass of soda or pop 78% of students getting mostly A s did not. Among students getting mostly D s or F s, 47% drank a can, bottle, or glass of soda or pop and 53% did not. These kinds of associations do not prove causation. Further research is needed to determine whether low grades lead to health-risk behaviors, health-risk behaviors lead to low grades, or some other factors lead to both of these problems. **The survey question about students academic grades is included periodically in the National YRBS and was asked most recently in Therefore, these analyses represent the most current data available.
