3 Tobramycin Check the order on the drug chart This can change when the results from your blood test come through. Your doctor will change the order, if required. A copy of the drug chart will be forwarded to you. Your nurse will phone to confirm the order. Clean your hands. Refer to poster Hand hygiene can be performed in two ways:- By washing hands and by applying alcohol hand gel. This is essential prior to giving of your drugs. This is the best way to prevent infection. Assemble your equipment. Clean work surface using detergent and water. Assemble everything you are going to need on the clean surface. Saline syringes, 10ml pre-filled x 2 - remove from package Baxter pump - remove from package Drug chart and label Drug vials Syringe 5-10ml Drawing up needle Alcohol swab and hand gel Check the order and your name on the drug chart. the volume of drug to be drawn up with the volume sheet.

4 Tobramycin Clean your hands Prepare the saline flush With the syringe facing up, press on plunger firmly to release the seal. Loosen protective cap but do not remove. Press on plunger gently to expel air from the syringe. Tighten cap on syringe. Open alcohol swab and leave on open packet. Your flush is ready Prepare the antibiotic Clean your hands Remove cap from antibiotic vials. Clean rubber top with alcohol swab. Allow to dry for 30 seconds. Attach drawing up needle to syringe. Insert needle into vial and withdraw required volume. Remove from vial. Repeat till the correct volume is drawn up. Expel air from syringe. Replace protective cap over needle. The drug is ready to be added to your pump. Remove protective cap on the pump. Set aside on clean surface. Detach needle from syringe. Screw the syringe containing the drug into the access port on the pump. Inject the drug into the pump and remove the syringe. Discard syringe. Replace the protective cap on the pump. Add drug label to pump. The pump is ready to be connected. Procedure Hold the IV access device between thumb and index finger. Thoroughly clean the access device with alcohol swab. Allow to dry for 30 seconds.

5 Tobraymcin Procedure Saline flush Insert syringe into the IV access device. Saline flush. Firmly depress the plunger on the syringe using a quick push, pause technique. Remove the syringe and drop into waste bag. Saline flush completed Stop if there is any inflammation, swelling, pain or you feel resistance. Contact your nurse. Antibiotic pump connection Remove the blue winged cap on the end of the tubing. Saline flush Clean hands. Wait for droplet formation. Connect the pump tubing to the IV access device and twist to secure. Check that the tubing is not clamped or kinked. Your pump will run over 30 minutes. Clean your hands. Disconnect pump, clamp tubing and discard. Repeat Saline flush as above. Clamp your IV access. End of drug administration Refer to the Baxter and Patient information booklets for additional support.
