Alcohol and/or drug education, prevention and intervention program for: Adolescents aged 13 to 18. Residing in Wasco, Sherman, or Hood River County. 09/24/08 AOCMHP Meeting Slide 2 1

2 STEP uses: The evidence based practices of Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). MET focuses on factors that motivate change. CBT focuses on teaching and practicing the skills necessary for change. 09/24/08 AOCMHP Meeting Slide 3 MET/CBT 5- Prevention/Early Intervention Includes two individual therapy sessions and 3 group therapy sessions. Main topics to be covered; Motivation building Goal setting Alcohol/drug l/d refusal skills Enhancing support network & increasing pleasant activities Planning for emergencies & coping with relapse 09/24/08 AOCMHP Meeting Slide 4 2

3 MET/CBT 12 Intervention/Treatment Includes an additional seven group therapy sessions covering; Problem solving Anger awareness Anger management Effective communication Coping with cravings and urges to use Depression management and Managing thoughts about alcohol/drugs 09/24/08 AOCMHP Meeting Slide 5 Family Support Network Services Includes MET/CBT 12 for the adolescent and for the parent/s, simultaneously; Six Parent Education sessions and Four family-therapy home visit sessions 09/24/08 AOCMHP Meeting Slide 6 3

5 Community Partnerships Community partners needed to be sold on the model Lots of direct face to face contact: Educating community partners about the nature of adolescent substance abuse & how to talk to teens regarding use Collaborating with partners on forums and community presentations Attending events put on by community partners 09/24/08 AOCMHP Meeting Slide 9 Program Outcome Data from 2 years 272 teens served 250 surveyed at intake, discharge, 3 months, and 6 months. Government Performance and Results Act (GPRA) tool on 250 teens and the Global Assessment of Individualized Need (GAIN) on 100 teens. 09/24/08 AOCMHP Meeting Slide 10 5
