4 SAFETY AND PRECAUTIONS The ALCOSCAN passive breath alcohol tester is a device that is designed for easy and safe operation. The following precautions should be followed: Do not open the case. Doing so will void the warranty and potentially damage the components within Avoid exposing the tester to direct sunlight for extended periods of time Remove any spilled liquid with a cloth and allow the tester to dry thoroughly. If there is excessive water damage, do not turn the tester on. Contact your dealer Keep all radio frequency (RF) devices (such as cell phones) away from the tester to ensure minimal interference WARRANTY All ACS products are warranted to be free of defects in workmanship and materials for one year from the date of shipment. ACS agrees to replace or repair any defective ALCOSCAN device, provided the defect was not caused by misuse or mishandling. Any ALCOSCAN device being returned for warranty repair must be properly packaged and shipped prepaid to the authorized dealer s facility. MAINTENANCE The ALCOSCAN passive breath alcohol tester is made for field use, making it susceptible to dirt and debris. The tester should be cleaned with a damp cloth and mild soap. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents. Yearly calibration is required to maintain optimum accuracy. The tester will blink a green status LED before a test, or blink a red result LED after a test if it needs calibration. Contact your dealer for more information. INTRODUCTION The ALCOSCAN passive breath alcohol tester does not require a mouthpiece or active user participation. It is able to sniff the air for the presence of alcohol in an ambient environment, such as the interior of an automobile or over a beverage containing alcohol. This tester is perfect for use in bars, schools and industrial-safety applications. The one-button operation ensures ease of use, whether you operate in the dark, with thick gloves or with one hand. This tester can be used in ambient temperatures between 5 and 50 C.

5 BATTERY INFORMATION The ALCOSCAN passive breath alcohol tester requires four AA alkaline batteries to operate. Remove the rear cover by sliding it up in order to change the batteries. The tester can perform up to 5000 tests with a new set of batteries installed. Press and hold the power button for 2 seconds to test battery strength. A green light indicates that the batteries are full, an amber light indicates that the batteries need to be changed soon and a red light indicates that the batteries are weak and should be replaced immediately. USING THE ALCOSCAN PASSIVE BREATH ALCOHOL TESTER 1. Press the power button once to turn the tester on. The tester is ready for a test when two beeps are heard and the status light flashes green. 2. Press the power button to collect an air sample. The tester will buzz as it performs a test. After the test is complete, the status light will flash amber as it analyzes the sample. The results can be interpreted as follows: Green = PASS: The breath sample passed. No or very little alcohol was present (0 to 0.19 g/l) Yellow = WARN: The breath sample passed with a warning. A small amount of alcohol was present (0.20 to 0.49 g/l) Red = FAIL: The breath sample failed. A high amount of alcohol was present (0.50 g/l or higher) 3. Wait for the status light to flash green before performing another passive test. 4. Press the power button twice to turn the tester off. NOTE: The tester must be a maximum of 10 cm away to give an accurate reading. For a breath test, exhale 3 cm away from the sensor inlet for 5 seconds.

6 SIGNIFICANCE OF BREATH TEST RESULTS The results of a breath test are presented digitally and may be interpreted in the following chart; BrAC is expressed in mg/l: BrAC (mg/l) SIGNIFICANCE Not associated with a positive measure of alcohol Not necessarily indicative of alcohol consumption Positive measure of alcohol and unsafe to operate a vehicle High alcohol level detected and dangerous to operate a vehicle BrAC readings of up to 0.05 mg/l may appear from naturally occurring substances in the body and are not associated with a positive measure of alcohol. Readings of up to 0.10 mg/l may occur from alcohol contamination from foods, beverages or medicines and are not necessarily indicative of alcohol consumption. Readings of 0.25 mg/l and greater are indicative of alcohol consumption and deemed unsafe to operate a vehicle. The result of which may lead to a traffic violation. Readings of 0.40 mg/l and greater are indicative of high levels of alcohol consumption and deemed too dangerous to operate a vehicle. The result of which may lead to a criminal offence. The following chart lists the various units of measure for alcohol concentration in the blood or breath and the countries in which they are used. 7 DISPOSAL AT THE END OF SERVICE LIFE Disposal of the tester at the end of its service life can be done by: Returning the tester to your dealer for disposal Contacting your local waste management authority for more information on the appropriate disposal methods to be followed Asking a suitable disposal contractor to dispose of the tester
