2 Health Outcome Data: Behavioral Risks and Mortality Table 2 shows Lakewood, as compared to State and Pierce County, experienced during 2006 to 2010: Higher prevalence of obesity (30.2%), coronary heart disease (5.2%), diabetes (10.7%) and poor mental health days (15%) among adults. Lower prevalence of asthma (14.9%) among adults. Lower motor vehicle mortality (5.8 incidents/100,000 population). TABLE 2: PREVALENCE OF HEALTH RISKS (PERCENT) WA PC Lakewood Obesity (Adults) Coronary heart disease (Adults) Asthma (Adults) Diabetes (Adults) Poor mental health days (Adults) Motor vehicle mortality (x100,000) 7.6 $ 6.8 $ 5.8 Based on the seven leading causes of mortality shown in Table 3 compared to State and Pierce County at the end of 2011, Lakewood reported: Higher rates of death caused by major cardiovascular diseases (243.9 incidents/100,000 population), cancer (195.0), and diabetes (24.8). A lower rate of mortality due to accidents (31.5). TABLE 3: MORTALITY RATES PER 100,000 POPULATION (AGE-ADJUSTED) BASED ON THE SEVEN LEADING CAUSES WA $ PC $ Lakewood Major cardiovascular diseases Malignant neoplasm (cancer) Chronic lower respiratory diseases Alzheimer's disease Accidents Diabetes Intentional self-harm (suicide) Data Source: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC): The Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS). Reported figures are averaged over Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC): The Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS). Reported figures are averaged over , based on Zip Codes 98496, 98497, 98498, (see zip code map). $ WA State Department of Health (DOH): Community Health Assessment Tool (CHAT). Figures are reported for DOH: CHAT. Reported figures are averaged over the period , based on Census Tracts 71803; 71805; 71806; 71807; 71808; 71901; 71902; 72105; 72106; 72107; 72108; (see census tract map). Note: 1. Estimated figures used in Table 2 are not exact measures; they are a sample of the population. For example, even when the reported estimate for City of Lakewood is noticeably different from the corresponding estimate for Pierce County or State, in most cases we cannot conclude that the difference is statistically meaningful. However, the mortality rate from malignant neoplasm in Lakewood was 17% higher than in State. The difference was statistically significant. 2. Findings above and below both the WA and the Pierce County averages are in red and blue, respectively. February 2014 Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department Built Environment page 2 of 5

Asthma: percentage who responded YES to the question, Have you ever been told by a doctor, nurse, or other health professional that you had asthma?
