Alcohol and Marijuana Parent Concerns
The Addiction Industry Is After Your Teen s Developing Brain
The Alcohol Addition Industry Example 70% of U.S. Adults Drink Alcohol 21% of U.S. Adults Consume One Drink Per-Week 7% of U.S. Adults Consume 50% to 60% of all Alcohol Sold 30% of U.S. Adults Have/Had an Alcohol-Use Disorder The Alcohol Industry Needs Alcoholics to Make Profits Alcohol = $400 Billion in U.S. Economic Activity in 2010
How Does The Addiction Industry Creates Addicts? Promote Use Of Additive Product During Brain Development Brain Under Development Until Mid-Twenties
Having the "booze talk" with kids before they take their first sip of alcohol is crucial, according to a report by the American Academy of Pediatrics in August Children start to think positively about alcohol between ages 9 and 13 years, according to this report. The more young people are exposed to alcohol advertising and marketing, the more likely they are to drink, and if they are already drinking, this exposure leads them to drink more.

Percent of U.S. Adults Dependent on Alcohol & Age They Began Drinking At 14 > 45% became Alcoholics At 15 > 38% became Alcoholics At 16 > 32% became Alcoholics At 17 > 28% became Alcoholics At 18 > 15% became Alcoholics
Ross Valley Youth Age of Onset Data First full drink of alcohol: 10 years old or younger 6% years old 8% years old 23% First use of marijuana: years old 6% years old 23% Drake CHKS 2013/14
Ross Valley Youth Data Alcohol > Binge Drinking (more than 5 drinks) triples from 11% for Freshmen to 35% for Juniors in the past 30 days Marijuana > 27% of Freshmen at Drake High School report smoking pot in the past 30 days. 20% in TUHSD and 16% in the County 40% of Juniors at Drake High School report smoking pot in the past 30 days 37% of Freshmen and 50% of Juniors believe there is slight to no harm in smoking marijuana once or twice a week Drake CHKS 2013/14
Developing Brain Science Brain Development Continues Until Mid-Twenties Developing Brains Can Become Addicted in 6 Months Developed Brains Takes 6 Years to Become Addicted
How To Protect Your Child Unfortunately, many parents subscribe to common myths and misperceptions related to underage drinking:
Truth > The opposite is true parents should be aware that supplying alcohol to minors actually increases, rather than decreases the risk for continued drinking in the teenage years and leads to subsequent problem drinking later in life. TEACHING RESPONSIBLE DRINKING: MYTH Some parents think that providing alcohol to teens at home decreases the risk for continued drinking as teens get older, and subsequent drinking problems later in life.
FORBIDDEN FRUIT: MYTH Some parents believe that being too strict about teen drinking during high school will cause them to drink more when they first leave the home and do not have as much parental oversight. Truth > New research from The Partnership Attitude Tracking Study (PATS) reveals that teens who perceive their parents to be more permissive about alcohol use are MORE likely to abuse alcohol and to
YOUTH LEARN TO DRINK IN EUROPE: MYTH Youth from European cultures whose parents give them alcohol at an early age learn to drink more responsibly than their American counterparts. Truth > A greater percentage of European youth report drinking regularly (in the past 30 days) versus American youth, and for a majority of European countries, a greater percentage of young people report having been intoxicated before the age of 13.
I CAN T BE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUTH DRINKING IN MY HOUSE WHEN I M AWAY FROM HOME: MYTH Truth: Marin s Social Hoist Ordnance holds the parent & teen responsible for underage alcohol/drug use in their home. Adult offenders pay a $750 fine. Youth offenders must participate in the Youth Court with their parent.

AGE of FIRST USE PROBLEM
Teens are Smoking Younger 8th graders that first smoked in 6th grade: In 2007 > 1.5% In 2009 > 3.7% In 2011 > 5.2% The Monitoring the Future study, the University of Michigan in packet, 335 in PDF
Nationally, in only four years ( ) The rate of 6th graders smoking marijuana has increased by: 247% The Monitoring the Future study, the University of Michigan in packet, 335 in PDF
More Teens are Smoking Younger While Marijuana is Getting Stronger 1960 s Cannabis Sativa: 1-3% THC 1970 s Cannabis Indica: 5-10% THC 1980 s Sensimilla: 10-15% THC 1990 s-now: 15-25% THC 2015 Marijuana Oils & Dabs/Wax: 73-99% THC Marijuana Edibles: THC Potency Varies Widely and Attractive to Children Synthetic Marijuana (K2, Spice): Plant Material Sprayed Psychoactive Chemical Both Have Caused Psychotic Breaks & Contributed to Deaths
Why are more teens smoking younger, while marijuana is getting stronger? Why?
Lack of Perceived Harm

California Passes First Medical Marijuana Law in America 1996
Labels Shape Perception In 1993 Perceived harm was 35.6% & use was at 26% In 1996 California labeled marijuana as medical marijuana By 2003 Perceived harm decreased to 26.6% & use was at 34.9% In 2016 How will the label recreational marijuana impact perceived harm and use?
As Labels Change Perception of Harm & Use Changes SAMHSA.gov, National Survey on Drug Use and Health 2013 and 2014

Marijuana & Your True Passion Myth: Weed makes you creative Fact: Dopamine is a brain chemical that reinforces life affirming actions; It makes you feel really good! Drinking water when dehydrated is rewarded by your brain's dopamine When you are passionate about something your brain triggers dopamine Marijuana s dopamine overwhelms the brain & keeps you from finding your true passion
Fact: Marijuana & Addiction Myth: Marijuana is not addictive. If you use marijuana before the age of 14, you are five times as likely to abuse drugs as adults, than those who first use marijuana at age 18 9% of all marijuana users become addicted 17% of marijuana users who start in their teens become addicted 25% to 50% of daily marijuana users become addicted
Marijuana & Education Myth: Marijuana doesn t affect student s educational abilities Fact: Students who smoke before 16 do worse on tests than those who begin smoking after age 16 Students who are high in class will have extreme difficulty learning Daily smokers under 17 are 60% less likely to finish high school
