Substance Abuse Impact Employment Professional licenses Other licenses Alienation from family/friends
Detection Changes in Patterns Psychological changes Physical changes Self-destructive behavior Enabling behavior
Intervention - Barriers Denial The alternative reality Feeling of uniqueness Abusers are resourceful Friends don t want to believe there is a problem Trying to treat the problem rationally
Intervention What Can/Should You Do? Do something Do it in a group Use concern and love, not ultimatums Know external resources
Intervention Outside Resources Employee Assistance Programs California Bar Assn. Lawyer Assistance Program (LAP) 877-LAP 4 HELP [ ] The Other Bar: Alcoholics Anonymous: Al-Anon a support group for relatives and friends of alcoholics: Narcotics Anonymous:
Treatment Know the level of treatment available o 12-step meetings o Individual therapy o Out-patient programs o In-patient programs o Professional intervener
Hypotheticals A long time colleague, has been arriving late at the office. You ve noticed this person s work has been sloppy and unprofessional. There is talk of late nights after sporting events and drinking with friends. Sometimes, after lunch, you ve detected alcohol on your colleague s breath. o What should you do? o You are his/her supervisor? o He/she is your supervisor?
Hypotheticals (cont d) You are in a lengthy trial. You have lunch with opposing counsel to discuss jury instructions. While you drink water with lunch, opposing counsel has 3 martinis, but without any apparent adverse effect then, or later in trial. o What should you do? o Same as above, but you do notice adverse performance in trial?
Reduce Stress Keep a positive attitude Learn and practice relaxation techniques Exercise regularly Eat healthy, well-balanced meals Get enough rest and sleep Don t rely on alcohol or drugs to reduce stress Seek our social support Learn to manage your time more effectively SPARKLE formula
SPARKLE Formula Sleep well Plan every day Anticipate less (Things will not turn out as bad as you think; things usually work out well; visualize success) Relax Keep anger under control Laugh Eat well and exercise.
Any Good News? Any good news? Lawyers appear not to be the professionals most at risk. Medical caregivers are particularly anesthetists drugs are very accessible and stress levels are very high. Everyone has some kind of crutch. Some people s drug of choice is chocolate. Not surprisingly, it comes from the cacao bean, and stimulates a feeling of being infatuated. It is not a moral failing to have a need for something to relieve stress and pain. The goal is to find a non-selfdestructive way to do so. How about golf? Miniature golf? Knitting?
Questions? Thank You!
