2 Introduction Your IYS Trend Report provides information for selected IYS indicators that reflect changes in your student population over time and comparisons between your students and 2014 students throughout Illinois. Results from state-sponsored grade levels (6th, 8th, 10th and 12th) collected during state-sponsored years are presented in this report. Because the IYS was significantly revised between 2006 and 2008, data prior to 2008 are not included. Data are displayed for each year and grade that the number of valid surveys are at least 10 and reach at least of the total enrollment at that grade level. Years 2008, 2010 and 2012 based on the school year-isbe Fall Housing Data. Numbers for 2014 are based on school year-isbe Fall Housing Data. Employing criteria for student representation increases the likelihood that the observed change is truly a change in the indicator rather than a change in the sample of surveyed students from year to year. The table below displays information about your local IYS data sample. Since the Student Representation is calculated for 2008, 2010 and 2012 based on the ISBE Fall Housing Data from the school year, Student Representation may be higher than, due to declining enrollment over time, inaccurate counts, or time lapse between Fall Housing counts and IYS surveying. Table 1: Student Representation: Hinsdale Middle School Grade N Valid Surveys N Enrolled Students N Enrolled Students Student Representation (2012) (2014) 6th % 61% 94% 8th % 53% 93% 89% 10th th The report contains two sections: Charts (with their accompanying data tables) and Reference Tables. The IYS indicators included in charts were chosen based on their relevance to a variety of audiences, their consistency across survey administration years (i.e. the questions or response options have not changed), and their likelihood to remain on the IYS in the future. The Reference Tables at the end of the document contain all of the charted data as well many additional indicators. Charts Each page includes two types of charts for the same indicators at the same grade level: A line chart displaying the trend over time and a bar chart displaying your students 2014 data compared to the 2014 statewide average. Since the IYS 6th and 8th grade forms do not include all questions asked on the IYS high school form, some charts do not appear for some grade levels. A list of all charts is provided on page 5 of this report Trend Report for Hinsdale Middle School Page 2 of 53

3 Line Charts Line charts display data for each year (from ) for which at least of students at grade level participated in the IYS. If fewer than of students were surveyed in a particular year, then no data point will be displayed on the chart. For clarity, each line chart is accompanied by a small data table to the right that displays the charted data values (either percentages or mean scores). Figure 1 displays a sample line chart reflecting trends observed at a specific grade level over time. Figure 1: Line Chart Table 2: Line Chart Table Bar Charts Bar charts compare your students with the IYS state averages; referred to as Illinois Students in 2014 (see Figure 2), based on a random sample of 8th, 10th and 12th grade public school students in Illinois. The data table to the right of each bar chart provides the state average range for each indicator in the chart and highlights with an "x" if your students scored outside this "average range." While the state average is displayed in the bar chart as a single data point, that data point is actually within a range of estimates. In the example below (Figure 2), the state average for 12th grade binge drinking in the past two weeks is 23%. Although the school s binge drinking rate at 21% appears to be lower than the state, the school s rate actually falls within the state average range (21%-26%). This means there is no meaningful difference between local and statewide usage. The rates of use for all other drugs in Figure 2 fall outside the state average ranges and are therefore highlighted with an "x" in the data table. 4 Reference Tables The Reference Tables are presented at the end of this report. Reference tables are organized by grade level. Each indicator is associated with a topic area (e.g. alcohol) and will generally include the full survey question (e.g. How wrong do your parents feel it would be for you to ). For indicators that are calculated (e.g. Body Mass Index), a description of the calculation is provided. The columns to the left of the question (item) display the number of students who responded to each indicator for every available year (2008, 2010, 2012 and 2014). The columns to the right of the question (item) display the survey data responses for each available year (2008, 2010, 2012 and 2014). The specific response options for which data are reported (e.g. wrong & very wrong) are listed under the column Data Presented. Missing Data There may be instances in the IYS Trend Report when data are missing from Charts and Data Tables and/or the Reference Tables. The codes and descriptions for missing data are shown below: "N/A" means that the IYS indicator is not available because it was not asked on the survey that year; not asked at a grade level; or only relevant for other grades (e.g. age of first use is only presented for 12th grade students) "N/R" means that the data are not reported because less than of the participants responded to that indicator, making the data too biased to report. A hyphen (-) means that the data sample for that grade level was inadequate (less than of students at that grade level participated in the survey). This would also include situations in which students in a particular grade did not participate in the survey that year. If you have any questions about your report, please call and ask for an IYS Coordinator Trend Report for Hinsdale Middle School Page 4 of 53
