OVERVIEW BUILT has designed this Supplement to be used with our primary curriculum Toxics & Tobacco on the Job: Protecting Your Health. The curriculum presents a comprehensive overview of toxic substances that construction workers confront and may be used both for apprentices and in journeyman upgrade trainings. This Supplement focuses on specific toxics commonly encountered by sheet metal workers in the field. Like the curriculum, the Supplement emphasizes the dual risks of tobacco and other toxics found at the workplace. The Supplement features a one-hour Toxic T-Shirt activity that helps students identify work processes that may expose sheet metal workers to toxic substances, and introduces them to precautions they should take to prevent or reduce exposure. Participating in the activity enables students to become more aware of tobacco s place as a workplace hazard that contains many of the same chemicals they encounter on the job. Extensive pilot testing shows that the t-shirt activity is very well-received, but when students complete it, they want even more information. The four units in the primary curriculum provide that information: Unit 1: Unit 2: Unit 3: Unit 4: Threats to Your Health on the Job explains workplace toxics and their effects on the body. Tobacco Threatens Everyone s Health gives more information about the chemicals in tobacco, the health effects of tobacco use, and second-hand smoke. Investigating Chemical Hazards on the Job introduces students to the skills and resources they need to investigate chemical hazards on the job. Protecting Your Health helps students develop strategies to make the workplace safer. Both the primary curriculum and the Supplement use the Construction Workers Guide as a student handbook. In addition, BUILT s 8-minute video, No Butts About It, provides a quick overview of tobacco and toxics and is a good tool to use along with the Supplement and primary curriculum. 1

REPRODUCE 3 BRING BEFORE THE CLASS STARTS enough copies of Handouts 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 (included with this Supplement) so that each group can have one or two different handouts. One Guide for each of your students Copies of Handouts 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 for the groups. Write the lesson topic on your chalkboard or butcher paper: SHEET METAL WORKERS: TOXIC HAZARDS Also make a chart with three columns on the chalkboard or butcher paper for later use: PROCESS TOXIC WHERE/HOW EXPOSED 6
INTRODUCTORY PRESENTATION SHEET METAL WORKERS SUPPLEMENT INTRODUCTION (5 MINUTES) [Distribute Guide to students at beginning of class.] INSTRUCTOR EXPLAINS: Sheet metal work can be dangerous. By their very nature, all the construction trades are extremely hazardous. But working with sheet metal and the products used in the trade creates unique hazards not experienced by most other construction trades. You also create hazards for other trades working around you. Sheet metal workers face the possibility of long-term disability from work-related injuries and illnesses. That is why, in apprentice and refresher training, safety is continually emphasized. There is the danger of injury when you work with sheet metal. For example, you could fall from ladders or scaffolding. Improper use of tools can also cause injuries. Then there is the long-term danger of back and joint pain from working in tight quarters. But today we re going to look at another hazard in the trade the toxic substances sheet metal workers work around or handle. One of the hazards we will cover is tobacco. Tobacco is a combination of many toxic substances. We all know what tobacco can do by itself. However, when combined with the other toxics on the job, tobacco creates even more dangers. Tobacco can weaken your body s natural ability to deal with other toxics or combine with them to produce even worse results. Construction workers use tobacco at a higher rate than any other group of Americans. This means construction workers are more likely to suffer the health effects of combined tobacco use and exposure to other toxic substances found on the job. These health effects can include cancer, lung disease, heart disease, and other serious illnesses. In fact, nearly one-third of older sheet metal workers have lung impairment, a rate three times higher than the general population. That is why we are going to look at some of the toxics sheet metal workers are exposed to on the job. We will think about these issues by doing an activity. Are there any questions? Let s take a look at what is out there. 7
ACTIVITY THE TOXIC T-SHIRT (50 MINUTES) INSTRUCTIONS Explain to the students that this is an exercise to learn about toxic substances and their effects on the body. 1 BRAINSTORM WORK HAZARDS Ask the class, What are some of the main processes we do on the job as sheet metal workers? What are some of the toxics involved in each process? Where and how are you exposed to them? Write their answers on the chalkboard or butcher paper, using the three columns you ve already put up. 2 DIVIDE INTO GROUPS Break the class into groups, each with approximately the same number of students. Explain that in this activity, each group will prepare to teach the rest of the class about these toxics. (If the handouts cover some chemicals they haven t mentioned in the previous brainstorm activity, explain that you ve included some other chemicals they may not have thought of.) There could be three groups with each group reporting on two toxics, six groups each reporting on one toxic, or any variation that suits the needs of the class. Be flexible, since not all the toxics need to be covered in the class. Provide a toxic t-shirt and ask for a volunteer to wear it throughout the activity. This has body organs marked and students can refer to it to help them visualize chemical effects on the body. Give each group one or two of the six handouts. Explain that each handout deals with a different toxic that sheet metal workers work with. Also make sure everyone has a copy of the Guide, which was given out earlier. 3 EXPLAIN THE ACTIVITY Explain that each group needs to find the answers to the questions on its handout(s) and be prepared to present the answers to the class later as a lesson. Point out that pages of the Guide have important information on materials they may be exposed to. Pages list some of the chemicals in cigarette smoke. Tell them they can refer to the toxic t-shirt the volunteer is wearing to locate the body organs affected by the various chemicals. They can also use the shirt to point out their answers when they give their presentation to the class later. 8 4 GROUPS PRESENT LESSONS After 15 minutes, bring the class back together and ask for volunteers from each group to give the information they found in the form of a lesson for the class. They may choose one group member to answer
5 DISCUSS each question, or 2-3 members to present the entire lesson. Have the volunteer in the toxic t-shirt stand at the front of the class so the groups can use the shirt as a teaching aid. Then have the first group present their lesson. They can point to the part or parts of the body affected by a specific chemical on the t-shirt. After each group gives its lesson, hold a short class discussion. Each lesson and the discussion that follows should be limited to four to eight minutes. Then proceed to the next group s report. See the DISCUSSION POINTS sections in the Instructor s Copy of each handout for ideas you should try to bring out during the discussion. This material is for the instructor s reference. Try to get the students to state as many of these points as they can on their own initiative and in their own words. Fill in other points only when you need to. TIPS FOR THE DISCUSSION This is a lesson on toxics and tobacco. It may surprise some people that nearly all the chemicals listed in the handouts are found in tobacco smoke or chew as well as in work processes. This fact should be pointed out several times during the discussion. The goal of this exercise is to let students learn how they are exposed to specific toxics and how that exposure can affect their bodies, careers, and lives. Since this is not a lecture, it is important to let students express themselves during the discussion. Use the questions in the DISCUSSION POINTS to help the class focus on the material. Encourage the students to relate their own experiences with these toxics. Your class may have someone who has experienced metal fume fever or zinc poisoning after a job. Let them talk about how it feels, how many days of work they lost, and what their doctor told them. Point out that pages of the Guide have important information on materials that sheet metal workers may be exposed to, especially silica and asbestos. Not all of the information on specific toxics in the Guide applies to sheet metal work. Help the students focus on those tasks or processes in sheet metal work that may expose them to each toxic. Students may be exposed to some toxics on the job that are not in tobacco. Point out these other chemical hazards as well. 9
Toluene HANDOUT 1 DISCUSSION POINTS Where is toluene found on the job? Toluene is used in many solvents, oils, sealants, and paints. It may be in solvents used to clean surfaces. It is also in many mastic adhesives. How does toluene get into your body? Toluene vapors can be inhaled. Toluene also may be accidentally swallowed if it s on your hands and you don t wash thoroughly before eating, drinking, smoking, or dipping chew tobacco. Toluene also can be absorbed through the skin and get into your bloodstream. What parts of the body does toluene primarily affect? The brain, liver, and kidneys. What are the health effects of toluene? Toluene can cause fatigue, confusion, weakness, memory loss, nausea, loss of appetite, and loss of coordination (similar to being drunk). It can cause liver and kidney damage. Toluene is linked to permanent brain damage and may cause birth defects. It is also a skin and eye irritant. How can you prevent or reduce exposure to toluene? Be sure to check the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for each product you use. Use a less toxic substitute if possible. Use ventilation to remove vapors. Wear coveralls and gloves, and use the correct respirator. Don t eat, drink, smoke, or chew tobacco in the work area. Is toluene found in tobacco? How can that affect you? Toluene is found in tobacco smoke. If you smoke, you re adding to your toluene exposure and may further damage your health. Do you know of anyone who s had health problems because of toluene? What happened? Let students share experiences. If appropriate, ask how the exposure could have been prevented. 10
Acetaldehyde HANDOUT 2 DISCUSSION POINTS Where is acetaldehyde found on the job? Acetaldehyde is used in many glues, adhesives, and resins. How does acetaldehyde get into your body? Acetaldehyde exposure is primarily through inhaling vapors. It can also be accidentally swallowed. What parts of the body does acetaldehyde primarily affect? The eyes, skin, respiratory tract, and kidneys. What are the health effects of acetaldehyde? Acetaldehyde may cause cancer. It is irritating to the eyes, skin, and respiratory tract. Alcoholics are especially affected as alcohol is metabolized to acetaldehyde in the blood, and this extra exposure can cause problems if you also have job exposure. Acetaldehyde may increase the absorption of other hazardous chemicals into the bronchial tubes. It may also cause reproductive harm in humans. How can you prevent or reduce exposure to acetaldehyde? Check the MSDS for each product you use. Substitute a safer product if possible. Protective eyeglasses or goggles should be worn.local exhaust ventilation should be provided unless there is very good natural ventilation. Wearing the proper respirator is important. Protective chemical gloves should be used. Don t use tobacco. Is acetaldehyde found in tobacco? How can that affect you? Since acetaldehyde is a component of the tobacco leaf it is in all tobacco products. Homes with smokers have two to eight times the usual concentration of acetaldehyde. By smoking or chewing tobacco, you increase your exposure to acetaldehyde. Do you know of anyone who s had health problems because of acetaldehyde? What happened? Let students share experiences. If appropriate, ask how the exposure could have been prevented. 11
Chromium HANDOUT 3 DISCUSSION POINTS Where is chromium found on the job? Chromium is an important alloying agent in stainless and high alloy steels. It is also used as plating and in some paints as a pigment. Some welding rods contain chromium. Stainless steel welding causes the greatest exposure. Paint with chromium pigments produces fumes that contain a particularly potent form of chromium. How does chromium get into your body? Chromium can be inhaled as a dust or fume. Fumes are produced by welding and torch burning on stainless steel, and by using chromium-containing rods. It is also easy to swallow chromium accidentally through hand to mouth contamination. For example, if you eat with contaminated hands, or chew or smoke tobacco, chromium can get into your mouth and be swallowed. What parts of the body does chromium primarily affect? The eyes, nose, throat, lungs, and skin. What are the health effects of chromium? Chromium can cause lung cancer. Chromium and its compounds can also irritate the eyes, respiratory tract, and skin. Chromium fumes may cause serious skin eruptions on people who are sensitive to chromium. How can you prevent or reduce exposure to chromium? Be aware of the types of metal you are working with, including your welding rod. If the metal you are welding on is painted, remove the paint since chromium is common in paint pigments. Use local exhaust ventilation when possible. Use the appropriate respirator. Keep dust at a minimum by using a wet mop and wet rags. Always wash your hands before putting anything into your mouth. Is chromium found in tobacco? How can that affect you? Chromium is one of the toxics in tobacco. By smoking or chewing tobacco, you increase your exposure to chromium. 12
DISCUSSION POINTS (continued) Do you know of anyone who s had health problems because of chromium? What happened? Let students share experiences. If appropriate, ask how the exposure could have been prevented. Zinc HANDOUT 4 DISCUSSION POINTS Where is zinc found on the job? Zinc is a major component in galvanized coatings and in some other coatings and primers. It is also found in brass and filler metals used in brazing and soldering. How does zinc get into your body? Welding or torch burning on galvanized metals creates fumes, which you may inhale. Zinc dusts can be produced by grinding, sanding, or cutting. Zinc dust can be accidentally swallowed. What parts of the body does zinc primarily affect? The lungs, nose, and throat. What are the health effects of zinc? Inhaling zinc fumes can cause a flu-like illness called galvanized poisoning or metal fume fever. Symptoms may include coughing, shortness of breath, sore throat, fever, and runny nose. Swallowing zinc dust can cause abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. How can you prevent or reduce exposure to zinc? Be aware of the types of materials you are working with. When working with galvanized materials, have good ventilation whenever possible or use the correct respirator. Local exhaust ventilation is preferred. Don t drink, eat, or smoke in the work area. Wash your hands before eating and before breaks so zinc dust doesn t accidentally get into your mouth. Is zinc found in tobacco? How can that affect you? Zinc is in tobacco. It is part of the fertilizer used in growing tobacco, so it is in all forms of tobacco. Using tobacco increases your exposure to zinc. 13
DISCUSSION POINTS (continued) Do you know of anyone who s had health problems because of zinc? What happened? Let students share experiences. If appropriate, ask how the exposure could have been prevented. Asbestos HANDOUT 5 DISCUSSION POINTS Where is asbestos found on the job? Any remodeling or rebuilding job can expose sheet metal workers to asbestos. All structures built before the mid-1970s should be suspected of having asbestos of some sort. However, some currently used products, such as Zonolite, also contain asbestos. How does asbestos get into your body? Asbestos is inhaled as tiny fibers that get into the lungs. What parts of the body does asbestos primarily affect? The lungs. What are the health effects of asbestos? Asbestos is a potent lung hazard. It can cause asbestosis (scarring of the lungs that makes it difficult to breathe) or lung cancer. It is linked to mesothelioma (cancer of the cells surrounding the lungs), stomach cancer, and intestinal cancer. How can you prevent or reduce exposure to asbestos? Always suspect the presence of asbestos in remodeling jobs. There should be a pre-job survey for the presence of asbestos. There are very specific Cal/OSHA regulations about working with asbestos. Asbestos removal jobs may be done only by licensed asbestos contractors. They should keep the material wet while removing it. If you suspect you are working around asbestos, ask to have the material tested. Isolate asbestos work and provide exhaust ventilation or dust collecting devices. Wear special protective clothing and the correct respirator. Don t eat, drink, smoke, or chew tobacco in the work area. Remove clothing and shower before leaving the work area. Post caution signs and labels. Because asbestos is a regulated carcinogen, Cal/OSHA requires many other precautions. 14
DISCUSSION POINTS (continued) Is asbestos found in tobacco? How can that affect you? Asbestos is not found in cigarette smoke. However, the combination of asbestos exposure and cigarettes is devastating. Workers who smoke and are also exposed to asbestos have over 50 times the cancer risk of the general population. Do you know of anyone who s had health problems because of asbestos? What happened? Let students share experiences. If appropriate, ask how the exposure could have been prevented. Lead HANDOUT 6 DISCUSSION POINTS Where is lead found on the job? Sheet metal workers can be exposed to lead when soldering, or when installing or removing lead-containing sheet metal. Lead is very common in any remodel job. Working on surfaces with lead paint or coatings is particularly dangerous. How does lead get into your body? Lead dust can be inhaled. It may also be swallowed if it s on your hands and you don t wash thoroughly before eating, drinking, smoking, or dipping chew tobacco. Lead dust on your clothes can easily get into your nose or mouth. What parts of the body does lead primarily affect? The brain, central nervous system, and reproductive system. What are the health effects of lead? Lead can damage the brain and nervous system, leading to tremors, muscular weakness, and lack of coordination. It can damage the reproductive systems of both men and women. Lead also can cause kidney and stomach problems, as well as anemia. It may cause cancer. It is especially toxic to children. How can you prevent or reduce exposure to lead? Cal/OSHA has specific regulations for working with lead. Always be aware of the possibility of lead exposure when you work around remodeling jobs. Ask about the presence of lead if you don t know. Wear the correct respirator when 15
DISCUSSION POINTS (continued) appropriate, and wear gloves. When you are soldering, melt the solder at 500 to reduce the lead vapor. If there is dust, use water to wet it down. Shower and change clothes to avoid bringing lead home to your family. Is lead found in tobacco? How can that affect you? Lead is found in tobacco smoke, as well as in chewing tobacco. If you smoke or chew, you re adding to your lead exposure and may further damage your health. Do you know of anyone who s had health problems because of lead? What happened? Let students share experiences. If appropriate, ask how the exposure could have been prevented. 16
WRAP-UP CONCLUDING REMARKS (5 MINUTES) AND THE POINT IS 1. EXPLAIN that in this activity we ve learned that sheet metal workers are exposed to many toxics. It is a part of the job. Taking precautions should also be a part of the job. In sheet metal work your most important tool is your body. It is critical that you keep it healthy, in shape, and alert. 2. REMIND students that most of the toxics covered in the activity, and more, are also found in tobacco. 3. ASK what the students know about tobacco as a toxic. 4. REVIEW additional information about tobacco: Where is tobacco found on the job? You may smoke or chew tobacco, which means you take in the chemicals directly. Co-workers may smoke around you, which exposes you to secondhand smoke. How does tobacco get into your body? When you smoke a cigarette, cigar, or pipe, you breathe in the nicotine and other ingredients of tobacco as well as the byproducts of the combustion process. If you smoke cigars, you probably chew on the tip, which means you get some tobacco into your mouth. Those who chew or dip snuff also get the chemicals in their mouth. There is no safe way to use tobacco. What parts of the body does tobacco primarily affect? The heart and lungs. What are the health effects of tobacco? There are over 4,000 chemicals in tobacco. More than 50 of them can cause cancer. Over 87% of lung cancer is caused by tobacco smoke. Many of the chemicals also cause heart problems. Heart disease is the number one killer of tobacco users. Tobacco smoke contains hydrogen cyanide, which paralyzes the cilia (small hairs) in your lungs, making it harder for your lungs to filter out other toxics. Almost all the chemicals we have studied in this lesson are in tobacco. 17
How can you prevent or reduce exposure to tobacco? Those who smoke tobacco at outdoor worksites should do it in designated places away from the work area and away from those who do not smoke. If the workplace is enclosed (it has four walls and a roof) you must go outside to smoke it s the law in California. Do you know of anyone who s had health problems because of tobacco? What happened? Let students share experiences. Thank the groups for their presentations. Thank the volunteer who wore the toxic t-shirt. Ask if there are any remaining questions. Encourage the students to share what they ve learned about toxics and tobacco with their coworkers. 18
