1 2014 NDSU NDCORE ALCOHOL AND DRUG SURVEY Use Summary The NDCORE Survey was developed in conjunction with the Core Institute of Southern Illinois University to identify high-risk drinking predictors for ND college students and used to develop evidence-based interventions specific to ND and for each campus. The NDCORE Survey contains several items about alcohol and drugs, including questions specific to ND culture. Included are questions regarding respondent demographics, alcohol and other drug use behaviors and perceptions of alcohol and other drugs. Nine campus-specific questions were also included in NDSU s survey. All students at NDSU had the opportunity to be included in this study through a stratified random sampling procedure, which included a total of students. Students were drawn from all ethnic backgrounds, all colleges, and all classes (e.g., freshman, sophomore). The purpose of this summary is to more closely examine the demographics, use patterns and consequences associated with marijuana users in comparison to non-users and the differences that exist between infrequent marijuana users and frequent users. The demographic characteristics of users are detailed below, followed by a summary of major findings and data tables and graphs. Throughout the summary, are defined as those students having used marijuana twice a month or more in the past year. are defined as those students having used marijuana once a month or less in the past year. are defined as students who reported they did not use marijuana in the past year. users who do not drink or drink infrequently are those students who indicated they did use marijuana in the past year (either frequently or infrequently) but who either did not drink in the past year or drank once a month or less in the past year. Major Findings-Demographics 25.4% of the NDSU student population indicated they used marijuana in the past year. Males made up 62.4% of all NDSU marijuana users Of marijuana users, 59.1% are (use once per month or less) and 40.9% are (use twice per month or more) and reported working full-time at nearly twice the rate of (4.1%, 4.7%, and 2.1%, respectively). 1 All findings except demographic frequencies are weighted by classification to ensure representativeness of the undergraduate population. For all non-demographic analysis, graduate and other students are removed from the population, for a total n of

4 Use Summary Major Findings- Usage Students report first using marijuana primarily between ages 14 and 20, however a large proportion of and reporting first using marijuana before reaching age 18 (52.9% and 42.8%, respectively). Friends (at school and home) are major sources of marijuana for marijuana users. report drug dealers (32.5%), acquaintances (32.5%), and themselves (9.1%) as sources for marijuana more than (11.7%, 23.4%, and 4.6%, respectively). users report using most commonly in private locations (i.e. in vehicles, private parties, etc.). However, also report using marijuana in residence halls at over double the rate of (25.1% vs 11.5%, respectively). Table 4. 6 Use Summary 2014 Major Findings-Other Drug Behaviors and Parental Messages A higher proportion of marijuana users (98.1%) drank in the past 30 days compared to (65.8%). and marijuana users report using tobacco at much higher rates than marijuana abstainers (63.8% and 46.4% v. 14.0%, respectively). account for virtually all other illicit drug use by students marijuana users report higher rates of parents talking to them about illicit drug use as well as their own use, suggesting parents may also benefit from additional resources regarding how to address high-risk AOD behavior. The percentage of (5.1%) reporting having parents who also use illicit drugs is nearly five times that of (1.0%) and twice the rate of (2.5%). Graph 3. 8 Use Summary Major Findings- and Alcohol All have consumed alcohol in their lifetime and in the past year. Considerably more marijuana users began using alcohol before reaching the typical college age range (18 20) than marijuana abstainers (76.5% v. 40.8%, respectively). exceeded in all drinking behaviors. Binge drinking rates are twice as high in and (83.5% and 83.9%, respectively) compared to (39.5%). The average number of drinks per week for (16.0) is more than three times higher than for. Peak BAC estimates for frequent and infrequent marijuana users suggest marijuana users (particularly males) engage in higher intensity drinking compared to marijuana abstainers. Table 9. That very few MJ users indicated low alcohol use highlights the prevalence of concurrent use
11 Use Summary Major Findings-ND High School Student Use Behaviors High School students in North Dakota use marijuana at a similar if not slightly higher rate than college students in North Dakota. These results support the high rate of pre-college age exposure (first use) reported amongst the marijuana users in NDSU student sample (see table 4). Table 13.
